Crazy 625-Powered 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SSS

One of the most desirable Chevelles throughout history was the Super Sport, and it remains one of the more sought-after offerings from the Golden Age of muscle cars.  However, when an SS rolled off the assembly line, it was always of the 2-door variety.  One of the great things about Restomods is that builders can express their individual tastes in these creations, with this 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle here on eBay wearing an extra “S” on the fenders, so I wonder if the visionary here may have dubbed this one an SSS due to the fact that it has an extra set of doors.  It’s what’s under the hood that makes this one truly special, so if you’re in the market for something unusual with lots of power, this one’s located in Gilsum, New Hampshire.  So far, the high bid of $7,400 isn’t enough to lift the reserve.

The seller here is the builder’s son, who reports that his father put this one together during the nineties and that it was entirely a home-built project.  Sadly, the owner is now suffering from dementia, but the good news is that three binders full of information detailing the build are said to be included.  Under the hood is a fuel-injected Merlin Superblock engine from World Products, which the seller says has a massive 625 CI displacement.  Some of the features include a handmade throttle body, a customized Weiand intake, and a 6-speed manual transmission sourced from a 1990 Corvette ZR1.  The Chevy has been sitting for several years and isn’t currently running, with a faulty fuel pump thought to be the culprit.

When the urge hits to create something like this, it’s a good idea to use a strong vehicle to begin with, and fortunately, this Chevelle is said to have started as a rust-free example with roughly 35,000 miles on the odometer.  The paint also dates back to around three decades ago, and there are a few body imperfections noted, such as a couple of blemishes near the rear of the left quarter.  The hood scoop also has a crack, but structurally, the sheet metal appears to be in fine condition overall.

Sometimes it’s the inside components that fall short in a build of this nature, but the interior here received plenty of attention, and the result is not only aesthetically pleasing but also comfortable.  Seats from a mid-nineties Buick Riviera are said to have been used, and other luxury items include power windows, seats, a tilt wheel, and A/C, which was reportedly working when this Chevy was last driven.  This one will need some tinkering before it’s ready to tear up the roads again, but I feel the visionary not only initially hit their target here, but might have even scored a bullseye.  What do you think?

First of all, dementia is a nasty illness( is there a good illness?),,when loved ones don’t recognize you, is heartbreaking. This sure is an unusual build, shows to go ya’, anything can go. And GO, I bet it does. Put a lot into this, and the 4 door will certainly be the fly in the ointment. A lot of interest, but probably $7500 in the motor, and sadly, what happens with these, is the kids just take the loss and move on. It’s a really cool car, better than anything from the factory.

And 10 dash gauges!(no waiting) Basically what you have here is a BIG-BIG block Corvette Sedan. I like it, but couldn’t afford to feed it

It is a nasty illness indeed Howard.. my late wife had it due to mini strokes caused by a lifetime of diabetes and the last two years of her life broke my heart. On the car, I can’t even imagine the work that went into it but it was substantial and I bet it’s a lot of fun to drive, although feeding it probably isn’t.

I had a 90 Lingenfelter ZR1 and the 6-speed is the heart of the speed it takes to run the vette with the LT5 “Chemi” that was in it but this thing has more bottom end in it and although the vette body would cut through the air more easily than this, that Merlin 🧙 engine would have no trouble keeping up with it lol 😂. When I drove mine on the freeway there’s unlimited top end unless you drive it on a NASCAR track or hit something with it lol 😝. What a wild 😜 creation. Only if the builders son could appreciate what his father built but then again I understand if he needs the money to take care of pops! GLWTS 🤙🏽🏎️🚀🔥💨

Aside from the Corvette 6-spd, it’s got the Corvette rear in it to. Just when you think you’ve seen it all…………………..

Was there a 4 door hard top option ?
The C-pillar looks good, havent seen much of a 4 door, so kinda new to me, and i like he kept the trim, and of course power windows.
Is a Merlin a boat engine company ?, second Merlin ive seen this month.

I don’t know about the hardtop option my mom had a 70 Chevelle just like this sans the merlin. It had the 307, I don’t think she would’ve lent it to me if she knew what I was doing to it…….

Man, dig all those gauges. Talk about distracted driving, but you would be right in tune. The problem with this car it’s so much a personal creation it will have a hard time finding a buyer, but it’s a labor of love for sure.

I don’t know why the builder decided to start with a 4-door sedan, but the more I look at this project, the more I appreciate what’s gone into it. Dropping a big engine into a car is one thing, but grafting on a Corvette independent rear shows that a lot of effort and fabrication has taken place. Even the interior looks way better than I would have expected — the console and seats really elevate the space.

A crazy car. But good crazy, for sure.

The 4-door makes for an even better sleeper – and if it’s good condition and low mileage, it’ll be cheaper in the first place than a 2-door.

I’m sure with the sound this thing makes, no one is thinking “sleeper”

This car has such an unassuming presence. I’d get rid of those wheels and go with base rims with dog dishes. Talk about the ultimate sleeper, the only hint being that bulge in the hood.

Whoever built this did a good job, it was well thought out and executed. Unfortunately, many of the modifications didn’t age well, largely due to them being trendy. The wheels, rear suspension swap, the intake and interior all date the cars the timeframe the when the seller says it was built. Since it doesn’t run it’s going to sell at a heavy discount from the cost to build it. Most potential buyers are going to protect themselves against unknown issues and make offers accordingly, are 4 door aficionados going to open their wallets? Who knows, if it sells for a low price it will likely get parted out with the new owner taking what they want, mainly drivetrain related and sell the body as a roller.

Popping that engine out and reselling it will quickly recoup the purchase price, those go for fairly big bucks. Then turn the car back into a nice 350 powered cruiser with a NORMAL hood..for petes sakes :D

Suck gas and go fast. Is this engine supercharged?. A Weiand intake could lead you to believe it might be. Anybody know one way or the other?
Being a Merlin leads me to think ‘big boat engine’ unlimited. Then, is the 6 speed transmission strong enough to handle the torque load ??
Dyno tested anywhere in its history?

The no substitute for cubic inches rule is applied here to the max… It would truly be a fun project for a sleeper.

Lovely looking car. I’ve always loved the 1970-71 Chevelle. I’ve heard of the Chevelle SS, but I’ve never seen an SSS. That’s different. And it’s quite rare to see a Chevelle SS 4 door sedan. They’re usually 2 door.

Must have been the guys pride and joy but didn’t get to drive it nearly enough. Hopefully it’ll be waiting for him in heaven. Would be interesting to see what happens when he pulls up to the pearly gates in this rig. I’m sure the angels will be nice enough to not show their amusement and our Father will say “Well done my good and faithful resto-guy”!

If it were in Arizona I would go get it and clean it up, swap out the hood for a fiberglass cowl hood, change the wheels with some sticky tires and make the owner/builder proud by driving the wheels off of it.

If they really wanted to sell it they would have put a SS style black rubber bumper rear insert on it.

I once paid $125 for a rusty 70 Malibu convertible, sitting in a field with a bad top. I forget miles, but I got it running. Put a new top on it, 4 barrel carb, intake and headers, patched the floor behind the seat, put 2 good used fenders on it. Needed a daily driver so I sold it for $650

SSS……Super Sport Sedan?! Creative if nothing else. Cool daily or Cars and Coffee ride.

God bless the owner and his son. Prayers going out to them. My folks are in differing stages of dementia now. One advancing, one just starting. Terrible.
