Crinkled Rolling Project: 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

As royalty among Mopar connoisseurs, just about any 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T has the potential to become an enthusiast’s pride and joy, even those examples needing attention in almost every area.  That sums up the condition of this one here on eBay, as it’s a rolling project that has also been involved in a fender-bender at some point.  However, despite the work required to get this car back on the road, 35 bids have already been placed, so there’s plenty of competition amongst those up for the challenge.  This vintage E-Body is located in Frankfort, Illinois, with the current price of $3,550 still not enough yet to meet the reserve.

Although the buyer has lots of bodywork awaiting, the seller is presenting this one honestly, assuring us that no exterior repairs have been attempted and no sheet metal defects are being covered up.  Even the paint is stated to be the original finish, which looks like the Bright Blue Poly color.  In addition to the exterior damage on the passenger side and front end, there’s also some rust on several panels that will need repairing, plus extensive attention to the roof and rear window area before a new vinyl top will be ready to glue on.  However, we’ve seen countless Challengers go from ow to wow, and hopefully this one will end up in the hands of somebody with the ability to resurrect it to like-new condition.

One of the benefits of stepping up to the R/T edition in 1970 was that not only did it get you everything the base model had to offer, but also included in the package was a 383 Magnum, which was good for 335 horsepower.  Optional was a 440 with either a 4-barrel or the Six Pack setup, along with a 426 Hemi for those with large amounts of disposable income.  However, this one came from the factory with the minimal 383 and a TorqueFlite automatic transmission.  Unfortunately, both components are long gone, so the next owner will have to decide whether to put this one back how it came or perhaps choose one of the larger powerplants instead.

Though also in need of restoration, some of the dash cluster is still present, but you’re on your own for finding seats to fill the interior, along with replacing the floors beforehand.  Some better news is that the seller believes the frame is intact, but with the amount of corrosion elsewhere, I’d sure give it a close inspection before deciding the rails are adequately solid for the long haul.  It’s hard to deny that the desirability of a 1970 Challenger R/T is high for the E-Body lineup, but there’s a lot of hard work facing the future owner, so I’m curious to hear what our readers have to say about this one, plus ideas on a fair price to pay here?

If you’re handy with some welding, have a suitable drivetrain in the garage and this goes cheap then you could have a decent beater to drive and fix as you go. I hesitate to say restore as this will be a lot to retire but for a driver it could be ok if the auction price is low and you do the work yourself.

needs a lot to get it on the road. Would love to try at the right price but at 70 I don’t know if I would try AT todays prices. LOVE THE 70 CHALLANGERS BODY LINES. Hade 2 of them in the late 70s, had a 440 hard top and a 318 soft top at the same time, damm what a dumb move to let them go & for so little, traded one for a two wheel to ride & give the other to my Father-in-Law, dumb….
