Dad’s Cruiser: 1975 Pontiac LeMans

This is a one family car bought new in 1975. We appreciate Pat L. sending in this 1975 Pontiac LeMans 2 door coupe for us to review. The car is located Fort Thomas, Ohio just outside of Cincinnati. The seller is asking $8,500 and the car is listed for sale here on Craigslist. The seller states that his dad bought this car new and it has always been garage kept.

This car represents the 4th generation of Pontiac LeMans which was built from 1973 through 1977. The original white vinyl bench seats still look fair but are starting to yellow and tear at the seams. The black carpet does not appear to be sun faded. The original chrome bumpers and rocker moldings are showing wear. The car rides on its factory Rally II wheels. The odometer has rolled over and the seller discloses that it’s been driven 153,000 miles.

The car is equipped with a Pontiac 350 cubic inch V8 engine. New emissions requirements in 1975 required a catalytic converter and the end of true dual exhaust for the LeMans. The 350 cubic inch V8 engine came with the option of a four barrel or two barrel carburetor. This is probably equipped with a two barrel Rochester carburetor. The ad does not have much information about the engine but it is said to run well although it needs a carburetor adjustment. Typically, that means the car does not run well at least doesn’t run well when it’s cold. The seller discloses that the car recently received a new battery, new spark plugs and air filter. The engine is backed by a GM turbo hydromatic 3 speed automatic transmission. A four speed manual transmission was no longer offered in the LeMans in 1975.

The LeMans comes with two car covers and looks good from the side view. An “appraisal” is included in the documentation from 2009 and says that rust repair was completed on the bottom half of the front fenders and in both rear quarter panels. A repaint of the original code 75 red paint was completed prior to this. All original parts were used and the documents state that the car has been maintained excellent running condition. This car could be hot rodded or kept in “Dad Condition” and driven as is.

A buddy of mine bought a ’75 LeMans in 1988. It was just like this one only dark blue. Same white interior. He paid $80 for it. Actually it wasn’t that bad and he was able to fix it up pretty nice.

These are nice cars I had one as a winter beater when I took the Pantera off the road. I was lucky enough to have a good friend in the used car market who would look far a winter beater every Fall. Then I would sell it in the Spring.

Needs a set of fat & skinny Cragars, bias plys, and some station wagon springs….then, out with the puny 350-2 and in with a 455 H.O. motor (perhaps with a tunnel ram). A 12-bolt Posi, a B&M Star Shifter, and a Molly Hatchet cassette. Done.

If it had air, and power windows, I’d be a buyer, love the colors, my first car was a 73 Luxury Lemans that I liked better, black w a white interior and full top,

I bought my 75 Lemans my senior year of school in 79. I had the Lemans through 6 years of the Marines then another 4 or 5 years. Mine was lake mist green with the white interior. I’ve kicked myself a hundred times for getting rid of it.

A guy I work with has a Buick Century about this year, dark green with white top and interior. A 27,000 mile beautiful survivor. He pulled the motor/tranny and put in a monster 455 w/built auto trans. Very fast, beautiful, comfortable.

Just the other day, I saw one just like this driving on the road – it was the GT model.

    Looked sharp.

If there was anyway I could get my 75 back, it wouldn’t leave the ranch. As for AM/FM 8 Track was what the pontiac came with. I bought it for 2195.00 traded a old VW in on it and got it down to 1595.00 Little did I know how I would value this car as I get older.
