Launched in 1966, the Bronco would be the first of several sport utility vehicles (SUVs) offered by Ford. While most think of the big family SUVs like the Expedition and Excursion, the earlier Broncos were intended to compete with the off-road likes of the Jeep CJ-5. This 1968 Bronco looks to be in fine shape, with a repaint and some more recent mechanical work. At under 50,000 miles, it presents as a survivor-quality vehicle with lots of life left. Located in Bayside, New York, this Signal Flare Red (aka orange) Ford is available here on craigslist for a tidy $50,000. Another well-described tip brought to us by Pat L.!
The Ford Bronco enjoyed a 30+ year run from 1966 to 1996, spread across five generations. It was reincarnated in 2021 as a compact crossover. Its first pass from 1966 to 1977 was as a compact off-road vehicle not unlike the Harvester Scout. It was conceived by the same product manager that recommended the Mustang to Lee Iacocca. It was a rough-and-tumble kind of vehicle that saw average sales of about 19,000 units during its first generation (16,600 in the year the seller’s Bronco was built).
This Bronco looks to have been well-kept over its lifetime and the claimed odometer reading means it has low mileage. The seller emphasizes that it’s “uncut” which is another way of saying unmolested. It’s the Sport edition which has more creature comforts and an original 289 cubic inch V8 engine for plenty of torque for off-road maneuvers (4WD, of course). Its condition can be partially credited to a clean environment (Arizona) where it spent its first 54 years. The exterior paint is newer, but the interior portions are not (door panels, inside the tailgate, etc.). There is some surface runs on the undercarriage, but nothing major.
The passenger compartment sports recently recovered seats and a repainted dashboard. For safety reasons, there’s a roll bar inside for when you want to do some topless driving (the vehicle, not the driver or its passengers!). A C-4 automatic transmission is present for those who don’t like to shift gears. And power steering and disc brakes also help with ease of use. Dual fuel tanks were included from the factory to help you go further between gas stops. These SUVs have shot up in value in recent years – is this one in your budget?
Beautiful looking rig and the automatic, power steering and disc brakes really transform the driving experience. I wonder where this truck lived in Arizona.
“Uncut” actually refers to the rear fenderwells being uncut. Most Broncos have had flares installed for more tire clearance.
