Desert Jewel: 1967 Cadillac Eldorado

I was just in Palm Springs and that general area and every time I’m there I vow to try to find a way to move there, at least for the winter months. Just what they want, more snowbirds clutterin’ up the joint. This gorgeous 1967 Cadillac Eldorado can be found in gorgeous Rancho Mirage, California, about a half-hour from Palm Springs. It’s here on eBay with a bid price of $11,656 but the reserve isn’t met.

There are several perfect Palm Springs-area cars that fit right in there for the classic 1960s vibe that radiates even more than the 100-degree temps do. The Rat Pack era and all that, those beautiful mid-century-modern homes, and driving around in this ’67 Eldorado would be perfect. Although, the seller really has a nice pair of Rancho Mirage/Palm Springs vehicles according to this photo of their garage. Fantastic. Although they say that they live in Toronto so I wouldn’t be the only part-time resident there – obviously there are thousands of them in most southwest cities.

This car is worth $25,000-$30,000 all day long, at least according to Hagerty which lists a #3 good condition car as being worth $20,900 and a #2 excellent condition car at $39,700. The eighth-generation Eldorado moved on to be its own model and also to a new front-drive platform similar to the Oldsmobile Toronado and Buick Riviera. They were made from 1967 to 1970 before the even longer ninth-gen Eldorados came out.

This car looks like a desert jewel, I don’t see a flaw anywhere inside other than three white dots on the front floor mat, and obviously, I’m kidding. I mean about those being flaws. The seats look great both front and back and the only exterior flaw that I see is one that the seller mentions, the vinyl top and rear window trim have seen better days. This is a Palm Springs area car with “no visible rust” which is a phrase that always gives me the shivers. Just a heads up to sellers: don’t use that phrase as it sounds like something a car dealer would say and it can and usually will be taken to mean that there’s rust underneath or in areas not visible in the photos.

The original and whistle-clean Cadillac 429 cubic-inch V8 runs like a Swiss watch and this looks like a great car. Have any of you owned an Eldorado from this era, and even better, do any of you go somewhere warm in the winters if you live in a northern climate?

This is the best design era of Cadillac. I love the sharp lines and the tail light treatment. Really shows nice in the gray metallic and the grill with the hidden headlights really gives this car presence.

When GM wanted to revitalize Cadillac for a younger market in the early 2000s (remember the commercials using Led Zepelin’s “Rock n Roll?”) it was the 1967 Eldorado that they reached back to with its knife-edge lines and blade tail lights. The “fold” in the center of the rear window is also a daring statement. It was the right choice as it is an extremely distinctive design architecture that communicates “Cadillac” in a unique way and is still seen in the Cadillacs of today, even the SUVs. Great job by whoever was responsible at making this car look completely different from the Toronado whose basic engineering it shared.

What a beauty! You nailed it with the Rat Pack vibe, Scotty. The good old days… park your Eldorado, walk in the front door… your trophy wife greets you with a kiss and a freshly strained Manhattan, asking about your day while you both enjoy a Chesterfield. I would never send women back to those days or take up smoking, but I’ll take this ’67 and the Manhattan. Thanks for painting a picture of a beautiful car in its native habitat.

Total bad A$$ car! I think back about 20 years ago to a very nice triple black 67 Eldorado for sale at NATMUS in Auburn, IN for $10k. I actually had the funds but didn’t buy it.

My dream personal luxury car garage would have:. 66 Tornado, 67 Eldorado, 65 Riviera, 66 Imperial crown convertible, 63 T-Bird.

First thing I would do is get rid of that awful vinyl top. You can see that there is rust underneath. So ugly and it ruins the lines of the car. Hideous

    That’s not a 67, likely a 68-9.

Its a 67 w 68 front marker lights. The giveaway the exposed wiper arms, one year only 67.

1967 Eldorado did not have the lights in the leading edge of the front fenders, there were body color pieces installed.

My Dad owned a place in Palm Desert from the mid 80’s until his passing 3 years ago,and we still go there , from Northern Canada at least once every winter. It’s as good as anyplace could possibly be ,without a beach.
Cars like this abound there , but there are 100 curbers perusing the papers, online, and personal networks ,that will always beat you to the deals.I will say that Keith McCormick”s auctions in November ,and February , always has many Caddies,Lincolns, and Tbirds and Rivs on offer.I bought a 67 Eldo,a couple years ago but it’s behind many of my musclecar projects and I’m going to sell it “as is” instead .When I see cars like this beauty that will sell for 40% of what I would need to spend on mine , it is an eye opener.

Small correction: even though the Riviera shared “E-body” status with the Toronado and Eldorado, it retained its own unique rear-drive chassis, unlike the Toronado-derived front drive Eldorado. The Riv didn’t go to front drive until the ’79 model year.

If this is the car I heard about from a friend, the owners want BIG bucks. Best of luck to everyone.

I’ve lived in P.S. for 35 years and am a classic car nut! I was a service tech for a utility co. and would go into houses all over this area. The classic cars that are in this desert sitting in garages and only driven a few times a year would blow you away. Many snowbirds visit in winter and pull them out only when they want to cruise out for a cocktail. I believe the most interesting home I’ve been in was in Indian Wells. When standing in the huge living room, house was over 9000 sq. ft., the floor was black and very shinny. Looked like glass. The owner said the floor is glass and then flipped a light switch. The entire floor was see thru into a basement garage filled with classics! Absolutely unbelievable !! He had over 40 cars and you were looking into a lighted underground garage. He was a very well known person and extremely into cars.
Then there was a large property that I was in, there we’re 2 4 car garages with very large doors. When you walked into the garage you were standing on a large platform that was an elevator floor. It lowered down into 4 floors underground where the homeowner kept his car and airplane collection !
35 years ago youcould purchase some of these classics very cheaply. Most of them would just sit in these garages and be forgotten. But as time passed more of these old folks realized what they had and the prices went up.
It was a great job I had with many perks!!

Only problem with this listing is the year of the car: it’s a 1968 NOT a 1967- FYI

This is not a 1967 Cadillac Eldorado. First year Eldorados had the parking lights in the bumper. 1968 they moved them up to the sides of the headlights. Also, ’67s did not have side marker lights. They came out on all 1968 cars.

Regarding ’67 vs. ’68 maybe it has some ’68 parts in the front end, but it has exposed wipers like a ’67; on the ’68 they were hidden. H7 in the VIN is Eldorado, 1967. Also that’s a 429 (as stated) not a 472. Both are gorgeous and powerful, though, and I’d take either!

Todd, I understand the whole windshield wiper thing, but how do you explain the side marker lights which were not on the ’67?
Personally, this car is a hot mess. It could be a ’67, but, with lots of ’68 parts.
I’d want my ’67 Eldorado ALL ’67. If I wanted ’68 parking lights and side marker lights, I’ll get ’68.

@ Angel_Cadillac_Diva & Todd Fitch; In the text of the listing the seller address this 67 vs 68 question. Perhaps in the past this unit had front end damage? When repaired some 68 parts where used? What also caught my eye was the license plate(s). No front plate?(not legal in Ca.). In one shot is has an 8Z** ***, this is a >VERY< recently issued plate. Most likely issued in the past 6 to 8 months. The photo where it is parked next to the T-bird it has a paper/temp Ca. plate. Me thinks, this is not a long time Ca. car, but a car that was brought to the Coachella valley and a "back story" written to fit.

Odd that the ’67 grand prix had hidden wipers, but Caddy’s flagship did not – in ’67.
Wiki says this gen’s “rear end(i think they meant to say just the tailites) was inspired by the [wild pushmobile – later crushed] GM-X Stiletto concept car”.

The seller added a note explaining the ’67, ’68 questions. He says it’s a late year ’67 production model that had some of the ’68 features added from the factory. He also goes on to say that the original owner was the CEO of Mack Trucks so it may have been special ordered. Beautiful Cadillac! $16,766 with 3 days to go.

    Hi Belinda,
I like your theories. But, trav66 said something about the seller said its a late 67 so 68 parts were used from the factory.
I never heard of such nonsense.
Anyway, I wouldn’t touch it with a 10 foot pole. Vin number says ’67, parts say ’68, wipers say ’67, side markerlights says ’68.
No thank you. I don’t buy Frankenstein cars.
