Desert Runner: 1988 Lamborghini LM002

Another day, another Lamborghini LM002. We just featured one of these a few days ago in similar low-mileage condition, not at all reflecting the type of use you might expect if it were kept in an enthusiast’s garage and not just as a time capsule. Wearing white paint instead of the typical red, it looks even more like the military vehicle it was conceived to be. This or a Mercedes G-Wagen? It’s a hard choice, so check this 33K mile example out here on the Pro-Sales Inc. website with a price of $339,995.

This LM002 follows the same example of the red model we featured previously: low mileage and a six-figure price tag. It’s sort of surprising, really, as it seems like you can go months without seeing one of these exotic 4x4s for sale, and now suddenly there’s two time capsule-grade examples up for grabs. The LM002 has kept its value at a very impressive level, seemingly climbing big time in the mid 2000s and not ever subject to a downward spiral due to a burst bubble.

What I love about vehicles like these is that despite their narrow market of potential buyers, they’ll likely never lose value because they are so eccentric. I wouldn’t buy one expecting to find a quick turnaround on a future sale, but rather because I wanted one of the raunchiest SUVs ever made and could enjoy it knowing the value would likely stay consistent with what I bought it for. Seeing a traditional manual transmission jutting out from the console of a truck like this never gets old.

The interior looks to be in mint condition, with evidence of plastic seat coverings from delivery still visible in photos. The seating surfaces and wood trim show virtually no signs of wear, and with over 30,000 miles, it’s not exactly been locked away with just delivery mileage on it. Of course, that kind of mileage would indicate someone had to spend some decent money to keep it maintained, and I’m sure the next owner will want to see those service records before plunking down that kind of change. Thanks to Barn Finds reader Russel G. for the find.

The luxury marque just doesn’t make up for this vehicle being butt-ugly. It’s trying to be weird-but-cool, and failing.

It could be worse. At least it doesn’t look like a 3d triangle!!

Whatever its flaws, it does look like a sci-fi military vehicle. It has a wonderful dystopian quality about it. It’s both futuristic and dated, like Epcot Center.

As I said the last time one of these came up, for $339K, the steel wheels look cheap.

To drive a serious SUV with a twelve cylinder Lambo under the hood I can deal with steel wheels!

I wonder if these aren’t showing up on the market now because they were mentioned in recent coverage of Lamborghini/VW’s new Ursus answer to the Toyota RAV4. The owners read the articles about the new CUV and remembered that they had LM002s sitting in their car barns gathering dust. Might as well sell while people remember them.

So, the LM002 was originally designed to sell to the US military, but as we all know, they ended up buying AM General’s HMMVW instead. The Lamborghini was built better, especially in that the Bizzarrini-designed V12 is a far better and more reliable engine (almost agricultural in its design) than the diesel V8 with a known casting flaw which exists to this day even in new Humvees

That’s a lot of money for ugly. Further proof that money and taste do not necessarily go hand in hand.

The gear shifter is so tall it looks like you need about a half acre to shift gears in it. But the SUV is so ugly it is kinda cool looking.

These are really bad-assed trucks. And huge in real life.
