Diesel Workhorse: 1986 Toyota Land Cruiser HJ70

For off-road enthusiasts and overlanding fans, the Toyota Land Cruiser HJ70 represents one of the most rugged and capable trucks Toyota ever built. This 1986 Toyota Land Cruiser, listed here on eBay, is a diesel-powered, 5-speed manual 4WD example showing 303,284 kilometers on the odometer and offered with a clean title. Finished in tan with a standard cab pickup body, it blends utility with Toyota’s legendary durability.

The seller describes the vehicle as in “used like new condition,” an impressive claim for a truck of this age and mileage. The HJ70 belongs to Toyota’s 70-series lineup, introduced in the mid-1980s as the successor to the 40-series. Known for their stout construction, these trucks remain in service worldwide, often in the harshest environments.

Under the hood sits a diesel inline engine, part of Toyota’s proven H-series lineup, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission and 4-wheel drive system. The combination of a torquey diesel and bulletproof drivetrain has long made the HJ models a favorite for both work and expedition travel.

The exterior, finished in tan, presents as a straightforward work truck with the clean, squared-off styling typical of early 70-series Land Cruisers. These trucks are valued for their simplicity and mechanical reliability, often outlasting newer vehicles with far more complex electronics.

Inside, the cab offers seating for two with a practical, no-frills layout. Though the listing doesn’t provide extensive interior detail, the HJ70 is known for its spartan but highly functional cabin design, built to endure decades of use.

With a reputation for longevity, global parts support, and unstoppable off-road ability, the HJ70 is a vehicle prized by collectors and adventurers alike. High-mileage examples remain sought after because of the platform’s durability, and clean survivors like this one rarely come to market in the U.S.

Would you keep this 1986 Land Cruiser HJ70 as a tough diesel workhorse, or turn it into an overland expedition rig?

I think this would be fun and useful for truck stuff, I would put a steering wheel on the dash and have my Lab great Dane mix sitting there as I cruised around town just to watch people do the double take at the traffic lights

Looks like this puppy has been well taken care of. Not sure why the battery is missing. Worthy of note this vehicle is the type Hamas , Hesbola, Houthi’s, and just about every band of terrorists like to have in their inventory. Fixed mounted machine guns, rocket launchers or up to eight whacky fundamentalists armed to the teeth will enjoy the resilience and great mileage the diesel provides.
