Every now and again, a car shows up in the donation lanes that just shouldn’t be there. There’s no rhyme or reason to this; it could be the way an estate gets settled by the heirs, or a retired couple that doesn’t form sentimental attachments to old cars. Whatever the reason, there’s an opportunity for shrewd buyers to secure a collector car or truck for a pittance of the typical asking price. Today, it’s a 35th Anniversary edition of the C4 Chevrolet Corvette, listed here on eBay with bids to just $455. While it’s not the most desirable limited edition Corvette made, good examples certainly go for more money than this.
Just over 2,000 examples of the 35th Anniversary edition cars were made, and they’re instantly recognizable thanks to their triple white scheme: white bodies, white leather, and white wheels. Offered as a targa-style body only, with no convertible offered, the 35th Anniversary cars were special in cosmetics only, as there were no enhancements offered under the hood. The most desirable examples are the 180 or so that were ordered with a manual transmission, but that’s not what we have today. If it were, you can bet bidding would be much higher, but I’m still surprised to see this auction sitting below $1,000.
The interior is in tough shape, and if you want this car to be worth a bit more in the future, recovering the seats is a must considering the “pop” it gives visually when you see what triple white combo. Still, that’s relatively short money in the grand scheme of things. The cabin will require a few different repairs, but thankfully, most of the other broken bits are shared with C4s across the production spectrum, so tracking down good used parts will neither be hard nor expensive. Although the California sun has had its way with things, that’s preferable to a northern car that would have flash rust on any exposed metal surface.
The seller typically tries to get donated cars to run, and in this instance, they weren’t successful. However, they don’t go so far as to tell you whether it’s because of serious internal issues or simply a failed component, like a starter or an alternator. In addition, the battery needs to be replaced, so they didn’t get very far after attempting to jump it. This era of Corvette would have come with an L89 V8 engine, pushing out a respectable 240 b.h.p. For the current bid price, this rare 35th Anniversary edition model seems well worth saving; would you take a chance on a donation car like this one?
Hi Mileage Vette. 😎 Must’ve been a reliable fun driver. 🏁
Maybe a good parts car.
What part do you think would be good?
If i look at the insides i don’t even dare to think about how the mechanicals were maintained. Sad end of life for such a beautiful car. Just a redo of the insides would cost an arm even if you do the work yourself over a period of time.
This has potential as a something you could run at open track day. These don’t need roll bars since they aren’t full on race cars. You can go with some aftermarket seats or swap in a set from another car, install a mild small block, go through the brakes and suspension. This could be built on a budget low enough that you wouldn’t be too upset if you slid it off track into a tire barrier.
