The Pontiac Grand Prix was a perfect combination of luxury and muscle. It had a comfortable, spacious interior with plenty of amenities and a powerful engine under the long hood to get you to your destination in ample time. The 1970 Grand Prix was part of the third generation of Pontiac’s model, which ran from 1969 to 1972, and my favorite of this particular run. Pontiac’s chief designer, Virgil “Exner” Exner, designed its stately appearance under the direction of Pontiac General Manager John Z. DeLorean. While a top-condition 1970 Pontiac Grand Prix is getting up there in price, this Model J edition in driver condition out of Oak Creek, Wisconsin may be an affordable choice for the mechanically skilled at $7,750.000 OBO and is available here on eBay.
The seller describes this barn find as coming out of South Dakota in very solid original condition with a clear title. The Model J was the base model for the Grand Prix in 1970, with the Model SJ being the more upscale edition. This particular Grand Prix is adorned in Sierra Yellow exterior paint with a Dark Gold vinyl roof. While the paint finish looks very good from a distance, the seller reveals that the right front fender had some body work at one time and that the paint doesn’t match on the driver’s side door and driver’s side rear fender with the rest of the vehicle. The interior looks to be Saddle Brown and also in good condition. The horn, gas gauge, and speedometer are said to all work. As this is the base model, it is not surprising to see that the Pontiac has manual window cranks, though the interior does feature bucket seats with the console. It is noted by the seller that the clock in the dash, AM/FM radio, defroster, and the trunk release button in the center console do not work. There are some very small holes in the headliner, and a small tear in the driver’s seat.
Under the hood is the numbers matching 400 V8 with the Turbo 400 transmission, with almost 99,000 miles on the combination. The seller states that the Grand Prix runs and drives very well, the 3-speed automatic transmission shifts great, and the motor runs strong. Another plus is that the Rochester Quadrajet 4-barrel is stated to be rebuilt. Noted issues that will need to be addressed are a slight rear main seal leak, an exhaust leak, and non-operational A/C. The underside of the Pontiac shows scaled rust, and the trunk pan also has surface rust, possibly due to an original rubberized trunk mat, which always seems to trap moisture underneath it.
The seller seems quick and forthcoming about any issues that will need to be addressed by the new owner and encourages questions or asking for more photos. The new owner will certainly have to put more money into the Grand Prix to address all the issues, but the low buy it now price on eBay reflects that, plus the owner is willing to listen to offers. The auction has certainly generated interest, as sixty-one people are watching it with one day until it ends. This could be a good winter project to get in order for next spring, as it is a solid running and driving barn find. What do you think?

Ended early before the auction finished. I’m guessing a deal was made either locally or off eBay.
