Driver Quality: 1964 Ford Falcon Ranchero

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Ranchero began in 1957 as something of a “gentlemen’s pickup,” based on a car platform rather than a truck. It was full-size from 1957-59, then switched to the compact Falcon for 1960-65, and finally to the intermediate Fairlane for the balance of its run (1966-79). This ’64 edition has a 260 cubic inch V8, which may have been lesser seen in these trucks than an inline-6. It only had one prior owner and looks to be in good, used condition. Located in Bakersfield, California, this small pickup is available here on eBay where the bids stand at $4,650 with no reserve. Barn Finder T.J. has been busy bringing us another cool vehicle!

Second-generation Rancheros were based on a Falcon 2-door station wagon, and it received its first major facelift in 1964. The truck remained in its compact configuration as Ford believed the market wanted a smaller, lighter, and cheaper hauler than a full-sized pickup (can you say 2022 Ford Maverick?). The ’64 Ranchero sold in modest numbers at 9,916 units in the basic model and another 7,165 in the Deluxe.

This Ranchero is in good running condition. It’s been treated to a new clutch, fuel pump, and radiator. It has air conditioning (looks like factory) but that will require some attention if you want cold air. The drivetrain is original, including the 3-speed manual transmission. Cruise control has been added, not something you would find on these vehicles in ’64. However, it doesn’t work quite right and needs some tinkering.

We’re told the truck wears its original paint scheme, which suggests a repaint at some point. The seller is aware of some prior bodywork but doesn’t know what or when. The bed doesn’t look like it has been used much to haul stuff and the interior may be okay, but not much in the way of visuals are offered. If the bidding doesn’t get crazy toward the end, this might be a nice little truck for not a whole lot of coin.

Tidy it up and paint it black like the one odd-job drove in Goldfinger.

Yeah…always liked to point that out to people that the little ranchero would be lucky to carry 1000 lbs let alone 6000. 😁 I was thinking it might be fun to make a wooden cube and cover it with smashed metal pieces or even paper mache to resemble a crushed car.

Odd Job’s was blue. And yes, every time I see one of these I think of the movie Gold Finger.

All that comes to mind is “Forest Gump” when I hear the name. Same way he said it too.

Well, at 1st, I thought, okay, under $5g’s at the time of printing, could work, but in true California fashion, now over $10 grand. Sorry, hits a nerve everytime. I had a hankerin’ for a 2nd gen Ranchero for a spell, until I actually drove one, good grief, what a POS, and it was a decent one. It’s no wonder they were poor sellers, and most just went with a full size pickup or Econoline, which were top notch at the time. The fact someone spends almost an entire years worth of income for me, on one of these is not funny, it’s sad. Falcon was the lowest offering, and a “Falcon pickup’, except in rare cases, just wasn’t what Americans wanted, in trucks anyway. $10 grand,,,unbelievable,,when the column shifter “locks up”, if they can figure out the complicated shift pattern, these spoiled brats won’t have a clue, and will be frantically reaching for their phone,,oh no, low battery,,,ONLY ONE POWER PORT AND DOESN’T WORK,,? Get my drift?

I could have sworn it was about $10k yesterday! Thanks Howard A, thought I was going crazy! Today it’s back in sane territory at $5300 with a day to go. Nice, original V8 Ranchero and it’s nice to see a running project in decent shape for less than $10k! I would check this out if I lived in Bakersfield.

What is going on in the world? Did I wake up in an alternate universe? At bidding over 10k, for a hinky driving ranchero? I had one as a kid and it was the worse driving, useless POS I ever owned! Just sayin. My go cart rode and handled better! Lol
To each his own, I guess….

The side trim suggests a ’65 model. I drove a new ’63 Ranchero (260 w/4-speed) for a year, and really enjoyed it. Not a real comfortable seat, but otherwise OK. I probably put 15K miles on it as a daily driver, and had very few issues with it.

The tailgate area looks to have a few rust bubbles around the tail lights and in the actual tail gate – maybe some minor damage back there as well?

Probably worth the 10 Gs, but not much more.

    Looking at this little jewel, I see some of my first car, a ’64 Mercury Comet Caliente! Especially in the side panels! Nice looking little truck;

Stick a 65 Stang wheel on it, some Mustang bucket seats, a floor shift, squint your eyes and you’re driving a 65 Mustang.

    Wow! Tough crowd today.
Not to worry, guys. In less than two years, this little pickup will be for sale again, with a hot new engine, four on the floor, Posi-Trac rear end, stiffer suspension, a set of Torq-Thrust wheels and meaty tires, and a flashy new paint job.
    Have I left anything out?
Pedestrian vehicles like this Falcon Ranchero, as well as the ’70 Chevelle featured elsewhere here today, just don’t stand a chance with so many people eager to muscle them up.
    Nobody respects a plain jane!

I’m w/DB’n Fred. Love these. Rather the round body (pre – face lift) and the 200/3.3 motor. The history is great (vedub bug invasion) and they sprouted the pony (muscle) & suv evolution we’re still in to some extent (falcon-stang-bronk).

The dodge/ply scamp/rampage, subie brat, mini & other lill p/us, even some Japanese (zukie, geo, etc) all havea place in my mind. No, it’s not a hauler for hire. Geta new F-450 or other for that. Every application hasa model out there. Sought one in the 80s. The bronco was more available. Glad just for the value increase to this time but still would like a ‘chero.

At $8200 now with a day to go! I agree with Gtoforever, must be an April fool’s joke! It was $5300 this morning, is there something afoot (economically) that the average Joe’s don’t know about? This was a $2500 car a year ago. Great little car that I would love to tinker on but for $10k, it must be going to someone with a lot more money than me!

      $2500 car a year ago…lol. Maybe 2005 it was. It’s a V8, clean and straight and running. It’s worth over 10k.
