Driveway Find: 1968 Plymouth GTX

Introduced in 1967, the GTX was positioned as Plymouth’s upscale mid-size muscle car based on the Sport Satellite. A big 440 cubic inch V8 was standard, with a Hemi being the only way to upgrade. The GTX stuck around through 1971 and became an option on the Road Runner after that. This ’68 GTX has been hanging out alongside a brick house for the past 25 years and is missing some pieces, but not its original motor and transmission. Located in Norfolk, Virginia, the bidding begins at $5,000 here on eBay. Thanks for the tip, Tommy T-Tops!

The GTX beat the Road Runner to market by a full year, with the former being targeted at buyers who wanted comfort with their speed. The latter car was more for the budget-minded and the Road Runner would end up outselling the GTX by leaps and bounds. From 1967-71, Plymouth built 44,000 GTXs. Nearly 19,000 were assembled with the new body style in 1968 and would prove to be the GTX’s most popular model year. Except for 400+ copies, all 1968 GTX Plymouths came with the 440 powerplant. An automatic transmission was standard, although you could ask for a 4-speed.

This 1968 GTX has been sitting for at least 25 years, covered by a plastic tarp that probably didn’t help a great deal. The dark blue paint (and what may be a white vinyl top) is rather worn and we’re told the sheet metal needs work, though the photos don’t zero in much. The interior is incomplete, with no signs of the front bucket seats or the gear shifter in the console. The rear seat may clean up, but the door panels and headliner have given up the ghost.

The GTX’s original drivetrain is intact but no mention is made as to what may be wrong with it other than sitting untouched for a long time. This car has the potential of being worth $50,000 but it’s going to take an awful lot of time and money (mostly money) to get there. It would help if the seller offered more photos and commentary as to the viability of his car.

This is very likely the worst ad ever posted to sell a car… The lack of body pics says all you need to know.

So when this thing gets purchased and hauled off to where ever will that be similar to a alien abduction for the mice? Dad this thing showed up and took our house a long way.
