Drop-Top Field Project: 1968 Pontiac GTO

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Pontiac GTO entered its 5th year in 1968 with an all-new design. The car began as an option on the mid-size LeMans in 1964 and was so popular that it became a series of its own in 1966. We’re told this ’68 GOAT is a two-owner car that went into a barn in 1989 (now in a field). The seller says it’s complete, but it’s going to need a lot of love. From Covington, Washington, this Poncho is available here on craigslist for $5,500. Kudos, Curvette, for the tip!

Convertibles were still in vogue in 1968, and Pontiac assembled just shy of 10,000 GTO ragtops that year. 60% of them came with an automatic transmission, so that is the largest population that represents the seller’s project. Demand would fall off in 1969 and 1970 as the muscle car industry began to feel the impact of rising insurance premiums on hot cars like these. From a peak of 97,000 copies in 1966, the GTO was gone after 1974, and reached just 7,000 units.

While this car was a barn dweller for more than three decades, it now resides in a field with some other old iron (all for sale). The seller says it needs a “basic restoration,” but I suppose that depends on your definition. What I see here is a lot of work and money in someone’s future. Somehow, the car has managed to have no more than a pair of owners in all these years.

We’re told the original colors of this Pontiac are Arrow Green for the paint, a white convertible top, and a gold interior. The latter may be in surprisingly good condition from what we can see. We assume there’s a 400 cubic inch V8 under the hood, but there are no pics and no description (is Ram Air part of the deal?). This car needs a lot of work, but when was the last time you saw a $5k GTO?
