Dual-Quad Four-Speed Fun: 1969 Plymouth Road Runner

The 1969 Plymouth Road Runner has long been one of the icons of the muscle car era, and this example listed on eBay comes with a combination that should catch the attention of Mopar fans. Located in Shelby, Montana, this genuine Road Runner is powered by a 383 cubic-inch V8 and backed by a rebuilt A833 four-speed manual transmission. The seller notes that the car carries a clean title and shows 33,200 miles on the odometer, though the listing also states that the odometer has rolled over. Thanks for the tip, Curvette!

One of the things that makes this car interesting is the collection of performance-oriented upgrades that have been added to the 383. According to the listing, the engine is equipped with aluminum heads, headers, and dual quad carburetors. That’s a combination many enthusiasts can appreciate, especially in a car that was already designed around straightforward muscle car performance.

The drivetrain setup continues beyond the engine. The seller states that the rebuilt A833 four-speed sends power to a 3.23:1 positraction rear end. For many Mopar enthusiasts, the A833 remains one of the most respected manual transmissions of the era, and seeing one paired with a Road Runner feels right at home.

A handful of more recent upgrades are also mentioned in the listing. These include a new MSD distributor, a Blaster II coil, Dakota gauges, adjustable QA1 shocks, and an adjustable pinion snubber. The seller doesn’t go into detail about when the modifications were completed, but they are listed as part of the current package.

The exterior retains the original power bulge hood, one of the signature styling features associated with Road Runners of this period. The seller also notes that the paint has recently been touched up and professionally buffed. Beyond that, the listing doesn’t provide additional information regarding the car’s cosmetic condition, leaving potential buyers to evaluate the photos and ask questions as needed.

Road Runners have always occupied an interesting place in the muscle car world. While many competitors focused on luxury touches and upscale trim, Plymouth’s formula emphasized performance and value. That approach helped make the Road Runner one of the defining American performance cars of the late 1960s.

This particular example appears aimed at someone who wants a genuine Road Runner with a four-speed transmission and a modified 383 under the hood. The seller describes the car as running excellent and presents it as a strong example of Plymouth’s famous muscle machine.

Whether you’re a longtime Mopar enthusiast or simply someone who appreciates classic four-speed muscle cars, this Montana-based Road Runner offers plenty to talk about. The combination of a true Road Runner, dual quads, and a manual gearbox is hard to ignore.

Would you keep this 383-powered Road Runner exactly as it sits, or would you make a few changes of your own?

I agree with a pistol grip and bucket seats, higher gears in the pumpkin would give it a nice taste down the 1/4 mile. Nothing drastic. Some subframe connectors will keep it straight for many years. Just saying. Meep!Meep!

ya see folks, not everyone has to do nor follow what is the social norm or expected or accepted.
some of us are just ‘livin the dream’ a personal dream.
The owner of this car may have worked hard, raised a family, sacrificed and always wanted a ’69 Roadrunner with dual quads.
So YEAY !, he got what he always wanted, and if the quads are 500s tuned right, sure, the sound and reaponce must be awesome. The post specifically mentions the engine has been customised, so yes, a cam and heads may just a well work with the quads.
The pettiness, of the peanuts in this gallery is whats childish. The comments on the ’69 Olds white walls, or the ’68 Cougar with the Supreme 500 steering wheel..
seriously people, where looking at exceptionally, antique, rare, American machines and theyre getting degraded over simple bolt on personal preferences.
If you seriously want a ’69 Roadrunner, here is an excellent specimen, a literal dream car.
BUY IT, take an afternoon, swap intakes and sell the second carb !
      BAM ‘Bobs your uncle’

Its a ’69 Roadrunner , its an awesome car, in beautiful condition, ready for diffent wheels, seats, carbs and stickers.
Stuff almost any ‘child’ with a 1/2, 9/16 and 7/8 sockets can change.
      Now, whos gonna comment :
OMG , the car ive been looking for , im buying it ‘ ??
      hmmm
or are we just gonna keep paying interest to the corrupt banks for that new disposable import ?

I like the color, if mine I’d probably go back to the stock carb setup. Carter ? I believe on most of these 383s. Plenty of power on tap.

Another car posted by a seller using a listing service. The description in the ad is horrible, it lacks specifics which would help sell the car, it’s as if it was written using a template. This car doesn’t seem as overpriced as those listed by, FSBO Vehicles, the other service, often featured on this site.

Steve R a strong running 1969 with a 4 speed transmission says everything about this Roadrunner if you know anything about these cars. Plymouth owned the muscle car market with there Roadrunners and the badges expressing its name tells you everything about the car. It’s a very beautiful car and there getting harder to find and it’s generation of people are dying off so this classic is a beauty who’s name says everything you have to know about the Plymouth Roadrunner.

Dual quads on a 383 is a waste unless, it also has a healthy cam upgrade, in which case the 3.23 rear gear would have to be changed to at least 3.91 or 4.10

I believe the pistol grip started in the 70 rr. I’ve had 3 rr , 69 and 70 . The 69 and 70 where both coupes the other 70 was a drop top. All 383 4spds wit n96 functional hoods. The shifter in this car is correct. Glwts. Peace!

Original or not it looks like a nice Mopar and it’s price is much better justified than $125k for a 318 Barracuda.

Wow, I really like this color green and I’m not a green car guy

I’m not sure about the pistol grip. I think it would be a matter of preference as far as seating position and how you can hold the shifter because given that the shifter might be kind of forward placed, the white ball shifter may actually be more ergonomic. So I think it’s a matter of just how your positioned in relation to the shifter. This one may work better than grabbing the top of a pistol grip shifter.

I would add the pistol grip and enjoy as is. Nice car and in perfect condition to enjoy and show at cars and coffee meet ups. Price is probably reasonable by today’s standards but I am thinking it should be closer to 40K mark

3:23 gears make for a logical compromise for street and strip. The headers, cam upgrade, and dual 4 bbls. Will aid in great 1/4 times even with those gears. I agree with the post that someone was able to build what they wanted. Anyone who can turn a wrench could make changes once they own it. Great car and it looks to be done exceptionally well. Hope some one who will really appreciate it gets it. I prefer the earlier Hurst shifter with the cue ball knob personally.

My deceased older brother had a 1969 roadrunner with the pistol grip shifter and the 440 he let me drive one time and let me tell you about it I was forced into the back of the driver’s seat when he told me to hit the gas then shift to second gear Wow” it was raw power and tourqe I would love to own your roadrunner because my dear brother owned a car like yours
