With only 83,800 miles on the clock, this 1988 Toyota 4Runner should have many miles left to give before it finally reaches its use-by date. It is in quite nice condition, and you will find it listed for sale here on eBay. It is located in Clackamas, Oregon, and is offered for sale with a clear title. The owner has set a BIN price of $10,999 for the Toyota.
I’ve always liked the look of these Toyotas, and this one looks to be in good order. There are no signs of any real dings or scrapes, and the factory SR5 wheels look good on this vehicle. The paint and decals look to be in good order, with no signs of cracking or fading. The only real fault that I can find is the fact that the lock is missing off the gas door. The owner does state that the vehicle is free of rust and accident damage.
The interior presents quite well, although there are some signs of wear and tear visible. The dash, door trims, and carpet all look good, as does the seat upholstery in general. There is some wear on the seat edges, and also some scuffing on the door pockets, which is pretty normal in a 4×4 of this age. The lid is also missing off the floor console. The vehicle is fitted with a power rear window, but this is currently inoperative. The Toyota is also fitted with air conditioning, cruise control, and a tilt wheel.
We don’t get any engine photos, but before we get to that, I’m interested in this shot of the headliner. I’m not sure what’s going on there, but it does look like someone has had a good old time with a permanent marker. You can only hope that this can be fixed without damaging the headliner any further. The 4Runner is fitted with a 3.0l V6 engine, 5-speed manual transmission and 4-wheel drive. I can’t be completely sure, but the vehicle will be fitted with power brakes, and being an SR5, it should also be fitted with power steering. The owner does say that the 4Runner does run and drive well.
There are some positive and negative aspects that have to be considered with this 4Runner when you are looking at potential value. The claimed mileage is very low for a vehicle of this age, but the owner doesn’t indicate whether there is any documentary evidence to back this claim. Assuming that the claim is correct, that makes this vehicle exceptional in that area, as many have clocked more than 150,000 miles. The general condition of the vehicle is quite good, but it is let down by the faults that I’ve outlined above. I’ve seen 4-cylinder versions with nearly three times the claimed mileage of this one sell for over $8,000, which indicates that this one is probably priced close to right. Regardless, with only 83,800 miles under its wheels, it should be good for at least another 200,000 miles.
man, THE first gen that I have always wanted. Currently have a second gen that I have been fixing back up for a while. the BIG BIG BIG No Go is the 3.0!!!!!!! They were “go or blow” as in the head gasket. Notorious for #6 cylinder being the area of the blow. I was always under the impression that if you make it to “45k, you are OK”! Looking at the small coolant hose on the top front of the engine and the, what appears to be horrid looking coolant, leaking, I would have to say that if the system is not flushed out soon, its going to blow! I too have the 3.0 in mine. It was at 145k and it let go. Head gasket at #6 cylinder. I was in too deep by then to bail. $5000 later I have a three year warranty. Wish it had the underpowered but bullet proof 22RE!!!!! Since its a stick, you can over come the underpowered as long as you don’t mind the revs!

Thanks so much for that BMW4RunninTundra. For reasons that I don’t understand, my computer didn’t show me all of the photos in the ad. I just dragged out my old laptop, which is about a million years old and still runs Windows XP, and that let me see all of the photos. I can see exactly what you mean about the engine. Maybe it’s time that I dropped my new computer in the bin and used the old laptop!
The 22RE is not exactly bullet proof, they had a problem with timing chain rattle, as they wear. At 95,000 miles my brother in law took his truck to a mechanic who told him no problem, even if the timing chain goes, it would not cost any more to repair. I told him, he should fix it, He did not and the chain wore into the water jacket = water in engine, next stop junkyard, too expensive to replace motor.
Preventive maintenance is the key to long life of any engine, some people are penny wise and pound foolish.
These early 2 door’s are real popular out in Colorado. My neighbor has one. I had an ’87, 2 door, one of the 4 Asian vehicles I had. It was a good truck, V6, automatic, nice, but needed work, and I didn’t even want to start with it. Very hard to work on. Great trucks, though.
At least by this point, Toyotas had 7 digit odometer, so 83K should be correct assuming it hasn’t been messed with.
Is the rear section of the roof detachable on these models? I seem to recall that on some of these it was removable. That would be a big bonus in my book if it were removable.
Yes the roofs come off. BUT, since it’s probably never been off before, you will have to have a new roof gasket in order to not have leaks when re installed.
This looks like a nice little 4×4. I had a ’94 SR5 4×4 with the 3.0 V6. Yes, it’s power was disappointing after having had an “87 22RE before. Toyota had a headgask recall on the 3.0 V6. Mine never popped. Best thing I Ever did for power output was to change ALL the gear oils to Amzoil full synthetic!! Should make somebody a great little ride. Good luck to the new owner and seller.
