Dusty Find: 1928 Nash Special Six

The Special Six was a smaller version of the Advanced Six and was produced from 1925 to 1929. It had brakes typical of the times, mechanical on all four corners and a three speed transmission. By the 1928 model the engine had a little over 50 HP. This dusty example listed on eBay has been sitting in that shed in Coos Bay, Oregon for about 18 years. It appears to be an older restoration. They want $12,000 for it which seems a bit high, but it is a beautiful old car.

It looks pretty nice and mostly original inside. That shag carpet on the floor looks like it’s from the 1970s.

The back seat looks pretty nice as well; big, plush and comfy looking.

The engine turns but has low compression on a couple cylinders. This is about a 220 CID OHV engine with 52 HP. It had 7 main bearings, a big improvement over earlier special 6 engines with only 3. These engines also have a pressurized oil system that lubricates the rocker arms along with the rest of the engine. Earlier overhead valve engines had an oil can mounted on the firewall. Can you imagine having to remove the valve cover every 100 miles to oil the rocker arms? Some cars, like Chevrolet, didn’t even have a valve cover.

This old Nash sure cleaned up nicely. It shouldn’t take too much to turn it into a nice driver with perhaps a valve job and the usual fuel system work as well as a muffler. The interior looks nice just as it is except for the carpet. It will need tires as well. There are flaws in the paint so it’s a long way from a show car, but it drives enough like a modern car it would be wonderful for weekend adventures or even running errands.

This is a nice looking Nash, and would make a very nice driver. The repairs needed could easily be handled in a couple weekends. In away it’s a good thing the price is a little high, it may discourage those that would cut it up to make a street rod. This deserves to be preserved just as it is.

Back in 2010 I was working for the Census and had to follow up on a lead [not permitted to discuss anything else about the person], and found the guy had plenty of vintage vehicles on his big farm. His family never sold any of their vehicles.

Inside the barn sits [still there I’m sure] a 1926 or 27 Nash Advanced six 7-passenger open tourer, all original, but not moved since 1937 when they bought the ’37 Ford V8 sedan that was parked outside.

And of course, nothing is for sale. Don’t even try [farmers have guns!]

Nice! Just carefully service the engine, fuel system, change the tyres and enjoy!
