E-Body Project: 1970 Plymouth Barracuda

This 1970 Plymouth Barracuda is a roller located in Madison, Tennessee. The seller states that he car has traveled 118,057 miles with an engine under the hood but no word on how long it has sat without a drivetrain. The car has rust but is probably a good candidate for restoration. This car is for sale here on eBay for a Buy It Now Price of $12,800. There are 11 days remaining in the auction and the seller has added a “Best Offer” option is you want to make an offer.

The seller provides a lot of pictures of the important areas on the car and there are actually only two good pictures of the exterior. As mentioned, the car does have rust and there has been some rust repair done. For example the left hand front frame rail has been replaced in front of the cowl. Most of the body panels are rusty and the trunk floor will need replacement. As bad as the rear quarters are, it is amazing that the tail panel is generally rot free. Pictures indicate that the left rear frame did not survive and it is rusted out as is the torsion bar mounts near the rockers.

The interior looks much better than the exterior. The bucket seats with fold now arm rest are not torn but just dirty and worn in places. the floorboard has surface rust and might be pretty thin. The exterior panels show dings and dents but the glass and bumpers are not too bad. The Barracuda rides on 14″ rally wheels with center caps.

The cowl is rusted near the heater box and a family of mice have made their home there in the past. Based on the VIN provided (BH23G0B119469), this Barracuda was born with a 318 cubic inch V8 fed through a 2 barrel carburetor. The car was built in the famous Hamtramck, Michigan plant in 1970.

So after repairing the rust, this car is a blank slate for the buyer to decide how he or she wants to power the car. Since the original engine was a timid 318 cubic inch V8 motor, it would not hurt the value to go with a period correct 383 cubic inch V8 or a 440 cubic inch V8 engine. Some may opt for a more modern engine and turn this into a resto mod.

G in the VIN for 1970 = 318, don’t believe the stripe, or the Dana axle which would have been there for a 440 or HEMI only. This this is a pile of crap.

Nick, FYI, that’s a 7 1/4 rear gear unit. Not much good for anything other than a slant six or a 318 hittin’ on 7 holes.

        Nick your wrong – that’s a 7 1/4 and not a Dana 60 .

Nick, you call most every Mopar project posted here junk, crap, scrap or something along those lines yet they end up bringing thousands of dollars not hundreds as scrap does. Show us what you got!

They were pretty cars, but I think the seats were way to low to the floor for comfort. A Duster was much better in this regard. AS far as engine choice, I assume it will go big block because of value and all of that, but they really handled better with a small block or a six. If you do go gigantic engine, for petes sake, beef up the suspension so you don’t kill yourself.

I would prefer the restomod route, myself, particularly with a custom chassis. I would especially go the restomod route in light of the news of Mopar’s newest product, information on which can be found here:

I seen a 1st gen camaro whose seats were raised up a bit with wooden blocks between the floor & seat mount(tho metal blocks or “washers” would be better.

Is that crack in the firewall bad news?

In the 5th pic down from the top, from that angle, if it had a flat hood & no rear wing spoiler, you might confuse it with a ’68 camaro.

7 1/4 rear axle in it so it no doubt has the light duty torsion bars and suspension.

Only $12,800? Trashed out motor-less Mopars usually go for much more. This is a bargain!!!
