Early Civilian Jeep: 1946 Willys CJ2A

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Willy-Overland built and sold a bundle of Jeeps to the U.S. government for the 1940s war effort. After World War II ended, they also wanted to capitalize on the commercial market. Enter the “CJ” Series which stood for Civilian Jeep. The CJ2A was one variant and W-O built more than 214,000 of them from 1945 to 1949 (the CJ line as a whole went through 1986). The seller has one of the earliest CJ2As which has been restored by its current owner (who has had it since 2013). It looks and runs great and is ready for more miles and smiles for its next owner.

We don’t know the history of this Jeep or what it looked like when the seller bought it more than a decade ago. The seller says he/she did all the work restoring the Jeep, including its non-drab green paint. Under the hood is the venerable “Go-Devil” 134 cubic inch inline-4 which is said to be stock, although the electrical system has been upgraded from 6-Volt to 12-Volt. The soft top was a recent replacement and we’re told that “soft” doors are included in the transaction.

Military-tread, non-directional tires are mounted on 16-inch wheels and the odometer reads only 1,300 miles because the speedometer was replaced (so the actual mileage is unknown). They say this Jeep is ready to go anywhere and are willing to deliver it in and around Center Moriches, New York. It’s been offered here on eBay for $14,000 OBO. Is a vintage Jeep like this in your plans?

Not sure I like the red colour, but it’s better than army green. And makes it stand out as a civilian Jeep, so maybe a good colour choice.

My ’42 was an Air Force Jeep, so since I was in the Air Force at the time and was friends with the supply officer I repainted it in Air Force blue. It was one of the Ford models. One of many cars I wish I still had. Nice old red Jeep here.

It’s $10,000 over priced considering a blue one just sold on Hibid in Montana for under $5k and I think there’s still a yellow on getting bids in Montana

A Jeep always fascinated me but I never really got hooked on getting one. I remember, back in the 60s, I saw war surplus Jeeps, listed for $278.00, complete. I knew a couple of guys who bought them and put them right to work. The outstanding feature in the military version was the full-floating rear axles. If I was to look for a vintage Jeep it would be one of the originals…
