Factory 400: 1977 Ford F150 Ranger XLT 4×4

Some classics blend into the background, like automotive chameleons, while others scream to be noticed and appreciated. This 1977 Ford F150 4×4 Shortbed Ranger XLT fits neatly into the second category, and it would undoubtedly command admiring glances and respect wherever it goes. It is set to go to a new home soon, with the seller listing it here on eBay in Caldwell, Idaho. Bidding has raced beyond the reserve to sit at $18,700.

Ford launched its Sixth Generation F-Truck range for the 1973 model year, with the range remaining in production until 1979. This F150 rolled off the line in 1977, making a positive first impression. Its two-tone paint combination of Bright Blue and Bright Dark Blue can’t help but garner attention, and its overall condition is impressive. The paint retains a deep shine, and any imperfections in it or the panels are too small to show in most of the supplied photos. Some reveal chips and developing surface corrosion on some lower painted surfaces, but addressing those should not be difficult or expensive. The vehicle is rock-solid, with no penetrating rust to cause potential owners sleepless nights. One item that surprises me is the rear bumper. With the rest of the Pickup presenting so nicely, its battered paint and surface corrosion looks out of place. Still, cleaning and repainting this item will give the winning bidder something to do on a classic that appears to need very little. The chrome and trim are in good order, as is the glass. The F150 is an inherently aggressive-looking vehicle, but the lift kit, polished alloy wheels, and enormous BF Goodrich tires add a touch of menace and should improve its off-road ability.

This F150 has much to offer a new owner considering delving into the wilderness. Its engine bay houses the Pickup’s original 400ci V8, which sends 169hp to the road via a three-speed automatic transmission and a dual-range transfer case. The seller added steering stabilizer shocks for when the going gets rough, while the original owner included power assistance for the steering and front disc brakes for an effortless driving experience. The engine bay looks tidy for a classic of this age, although I’m probably not alone in wishing the seller had been a bit less enthusiastic with the detailing spray. They would have been better served to spend the time adding information to their listing indicating how the vehicle drives. They supply this YouTube video allowing us to hear the V8 running. It sounds as sweet as a nut, with no smoke or odd noises.

Opening this Ford’s doors reveals an interior that needs nothing but has some welcoming updates to make life more enjoyable for the new owner. The seat wears a new diamond-patterned cover with no wear or other problems. The driver grasps a period-correct sports wheel, and a retro-style stereo provides tunes on the move. The rest of the interior presents well for a vehicle of this type and age, with no significant issues or problems. The Dark Blue carpet is in good condition, with the owner wisely protecting it with high-quality mats. The dash and pad haven’t succumbed to abuse or UV damage, and the faux woodgrain hasn’t lifted or faded. There are no factory accessories like air conditioning or power windows, but it probably won’t need A/C unless the winning bidder lives in a warm location. If that’s the case, sourcing and installing an aftermarket system should be straightforward. Otherwise, the interior needs nothing.

This 1977 F150 Shortbed is a stunning classic, and it would take little effort to lift its overall presentation to a higher level. The seller’s claim that it comes with a known ownership history is reassuring for potential buyers, and the 400ci V8 under the hood should allow it to haul some pretty impressive loads easily. These factors combine to make it an attractive proposition, no doubt contributing to the fact it has already attracted twenty-six bids. I suspect the total will climb, but are you willing to kick things off by submitting the twenty-seventh? If you do, I could hardly blame you.

Another nice Ford from this seller, who is well-represented on this site. This is my favorite generation of Ford pickups.

I think I am beginning to understand the seller’s business model. Find old trucks in reasonable shape, do bodywork/paint, install new upholstery but not necessarily any more interior work, add modern tires and wheels (often including the popular-today lift kit), update the mechanicals but not necessarily any visual/restoration work underhood, sell on ebay. In today’s red-hot market for trucks, it works.

I’m not sure what the seller means by “late 77, has some 78 features” comment; it shows an 11/76 build month.

Like I said, this is a real nice, eye-catching truck, and would be a joy to own. But it’s not necessarily a high-end show truck, if that is what one wants.

Another nice 4wd. Nice color combo. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen it on one of these. I remember mostly shades of browns and greens on these.

Nice truck. I remember shades of brown on the trucks on BF but most of that was mud or rust. Lot of work went into this one.

Is this the 400M motor. The one with no power. Upgrades now available for 450+ hp with no boost.

The engine family was 351M/400, no such thing as a 400M, and they did have some power, but like any engine from back then, there was room for improvement, and improvement was, and still is, available today.

Love it. Beautiful truck. Not that it matters, but that looks like a ’75 or older grill though.

Definitely 73 to 75 grille. 78 should have the 6 square per side rectangular eggcrate grille with amber turn signals above the headlights.

Nice pickup but it’s at or approaching its max value, imo.

People have lost their minds with what they think & want for these vehicles that aren’t even anything special about them

There’s a few commenters here who don’t seem to be in touch with reality, these old 4x4s are bringing big bucks these days, it’s not a new concept, not that I like it either, but that’s the way it is. This truck does have a 73-75 grille, personally I prefer it over the original 76-77 style. Nice truck.

Beautiful looking truck. Are you sure about the year of the truck? The title says “1977 Ford F150 Ranger XLT”, but judging by the front end, it looks like before 1976, either 1973, 1974, or 1975.

This is a hot truck! Totally worth it. The price difference between a new or newer truck is astounding! The difference in money ( price ) pays for difference in fuel economy this truck gets versus a newer model. PLUS – it’s a classic! And this one looks amazing! Yeah , I’d buy it. Good luck and a great article!

I bought through financing, a 2017 Single Cab Short Bed F150 because I knew I’d never know one otherwise. Never thought it would get the attention it gets. It does my heart good that gearheads are getting it. That truck is a Red Necks Sports Car. But more importantly, it’s a strong example of, some things never truly going out of style but…Maybe just taking a little break. Buy it because You love it. It will love You back.
