Factory LT1: 1995 Chevrolet Caprice

When a seller states that their classic isn’t for the timid, that typically indicates that it has plenty of power emanating from under the hood. Such would appear to be the case with this 1995 Chevrolet Caprice. It features the range-topping LT1 V8, providing enough performance to satisfy many enthusiasts. It has cosmetic needs, but its rust-free status means that addressing these as time and circumstances allow would be fairly straightforward. The seller has listed the Caprice here on Craigslist in Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada. I must say a big thank you to Barn Finder Curvette for spotting a classic that could be yours for $5,000.

Chevrolet introduced its Fourth Generation Caprice range in 1991, with the company adopting a softer look than seen on its predecessor. There was a strong focus on aerodynamic efficiency to improve performance and fuel economy, although it is worth noting that the Caprice was still a big car by any standard. This car rolled off the line in 1995, and closely examining the supplied photos confirms that it has cosmetic needs. Some dings and dents require attention, but none are bad enough to justify panel replacement. The paint shines reasonably well for a vehicle of this vintage. However, performing a repaint once the panel imperfections have been addressed might prove irresistible to some potential buyers. There is no evidence or mention of rust, and the plastic has survived the ravages of time with no apparent significant deterioration. The larger Rally wheels and the rear spoiler give this classic a sense of purpose, suggesting there might be more to it than meets the eye.

Powering this Caprice is one of America’s most iconic V8s. The 5.7-liter LT1 produces a very healthy 260hp and 330 ft/lbs of torque, which feeds to the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission. This package was a firm favorite amongst law enforcement agencies, with many cars serving faithfully in that role years after production ended. Potential buyers can consider this a turnkey classic. The transmission is freshly rebuilt, shifting as it is supposed to. It features new tires and a new 3″ exhaust. The seller states that this Caprice isn’t for the timid, suggesting that the LT1 has lost nothing in the twenty-nine years since this baby left the line.

This Caprice’s interior demonstrates how condition is subjective, with the seller describing it as excellent. Certainly, the Blue leather upholstered surfaces exhibit little beyond the typical wrinkles of age, but it appears that some plastic pieces are beginning to show signs of age and UV exposure. The carpet is well beyond needing a simple clean, and the buyer will probably elect to splash around $300 on a new carpet set to lift the appearance. That single purchase would make an enormous difference to an interior featuring dual airbags, air conditioning, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, splashes of faux woodgrain, and a leather-wrapped tilt wheel.

The seller describes their sale price for this 1995 Chevrolet Caprice as a steal, suggesting that the new owner should drive it like they stole it. It certainly shouldn’t be found wanting once the pedal hits the metal, while addressing its cosmetic needs would be a rewarding undertaking for those preferring the hands-on approach. The price looks quite affordable and is realistic in the current market. Those factors combine to make this Caprice worth more than a passing glance.

Always seemed to me the body was longer than the wheelbase on these, SS models included. Note how far the rear wheels set forward into the wheel wells. Which to me, just added more ugly to the whole mess in general!

The 1988 4 door Cadillac Voyage concept looks a lot better, tho i’d rather have the 1989 Cadillac 2 door Solitaire concept.
Both seen in some sci-fi movies.

What’s up with the rear axle? Looks like an altered wheelbase car. The interior and underhood look like driven hard and put away wet. Like they have the unlimited car wash card.

One of the trailing arms is most likely bent.

If one or both of the trailing arms are bent, what you see in the photo is the result.

That is the design of the rear wheel/axle. If you google photos of the model, they are all like that. It does make it look like someone modified the axle placement.

That’s a foolish statement if there was! Let’s be realistic & stop comparing apples w/oranges. This ride is a rocket compared to a Crown Vic, or Mercury Marauder, or any other a full-size, RWD, front-engine vehicle ride. Show me a Camry that’ll EVER see 140mph. My ’95 9C1 (police) Caprice has 307K on the clock…& it’ll still take care of business! I bought it new & it’ll be in my garage ’til I go to that 1/4 mile in the sky!

A 2020 Camry has a 0-60 time of 5.8 seconds. Thats an ordinary car on todays roads. This Caprice has a 0-60 of 8.5. This is not a powerful or special car, it’s a slug. A post card could be delivered quicker than the Caprice would get to 140, lol. Stop with the “powerful car” nonsense. Like I said, a perfectly good old-man cruiser, but not a bruiser.

The power increase of the port injected 350 over the TBI was a significant jump in 1993. Of course today it doesn’t sound like a big deal but it was at the time. So, you like your Camary?

I don’t own a Camry and the year is now 2025. I have only owned American cars for the past 50 years. The Camry was just an example of an every day car thats on the road today. Take your pick, there are many 4 and 6 cylinder cars that are faster than this elephant. The LT1 in my ’95 corvette was OK, but still not a “powerful” car at 300 HP and 800 lbs less than the Caprice. The LS1 in my C5 is adequate, but I always want more, Who doesn’t? The detuned LT1 in the Caprice was never a big deal.

You really don’t get it do you Dave? The majority of those on this site have an appreciation for what was and still is today. Coming out of the 70s and 80s, progress made during the 90s was like fresh air. Those who lived through the performance decline and mounting government regulations welcomed cars like this Caprice and the Impala SS. Few people will carry the same passion for a thirty year old Camary. Stroking your fragile ego at the expense of others is pretty shallow.

Nelson, I’m just stating facts, and I didn’t attack YOUR ego. You should probably test drive and actual “fast car” and see the difference for yourself. I live in the real world, and this dinosaur was never “fast”, lol! It’s a perfectly good car, but it’s a slug. Honestly I see it as an overpriced donor car. That chassis would be an excellent donor for a 50’s Chevy car or truck. Imagine the smooth ride with modern components. < That's my opinion Nelson and I'm entitled to it without being personally attacked, per the rules of Barn Finds.

My ego, Dave? Nah, I’m not the kind of guy who has to be stroked. This car was mearly a product of its time. People received it well and some still have fond memories. Whether that’s you or not doesn’t matter. To each his own.

Always thought these looked like a blue whale. Needs an interior sterilisation and a whole lot of cleaning under the hood.
