Factory Wide Body: 1988 Porsche 911 Cabriolet

In most circumstances, being a poser is never a good thing. But for some well-heeled Porsche owners, looking like a turbocharged 911 without actually having the raucous motor in the hindquarters made for a very desirable upgrade that few cars wear today. The “turbo-look”, otherwise known as the M491 option, allowed buyers to get the turbocharged model’s fenders, spoilers, and brakes in a naturally-aspirated model. Given the price tag, you won’t find very many out there, especially in cabriolet form like this example listed here on eBay for $150,000 or best offer.

The turbocharged G-body, otherwise known as a 930, was one of the hairest sports cars of the 1980s. Known as the “widow maker” for its tendency to surprise inexperienced drivers, the 930 today remains one of the more sought-after 911s of the last 50 years. Of course, like every turbo model since, it comes with all things the inner boy racer that lives in all of us loves, from front and rear spoilers, staggered wheels, and the aforementioned flared arches.

The ability to add a turbo-look body to a naturally-aspirated model likely appealed to buyers for a few different reasons. For one thing, it almost certainly was a cheaper car to buy right out of the gate. And then there’s the cost savings associated with the insurance rates that would likely accompany an actual turbo model. Last, there may have even been some incremental savings on the maintenance side, not that I anticipate most of the original buyers of these cars were all that worried about cheaper oil changes. Mileage on this 911 is under 20,000, so it’s no surprise it appears to be mint inside and out.

The seller doesn’t tell us much about the 911’s past, from its maintenance history to how many owners its had. The low mileage would suggest there’s not much to worry about, but you still want to know that a car like this has received annual fluid changes and inspections when possible. Truth be told, $150,000 seems pretty light these days for an air-cooled 911 that will undoubtedly be an item for years to come, and even more so if the seller actually accepts a lower offer.

You know, briefly( yay), if I could have rented a fabulous vehicle like this, instead of that crappy Kia, I might still enjoy driving. I still think they look kind of goony, but what a car.

You have to admit to it’s “mean machine” look. You also have to admit it’s one of the best examples of the breed we’ve seen in quiet a while. It would be interesting to see what the final selling price is on this one.

I would love to own and drive this car, but like many I have champagne taste on a beer budget!

The pinnacle of Porsche Bad-Assness (if there is such a word).

Back when widebody meant more than glued on fender flares.
