Fastback Project: 1965 Ford Mustang

The Mustang debuted at the New York World’s Fair in April 1964 and sold like hot cakes for the next several years. At first, only coupes and convertibles were offered, but the fastback joined the lineup when the full 1965 model year went into production. The seller’s fastback has been in storage for years and will need some mechanical work along with a lot of cosmetic TLC. Located in Cordova, Tennessee, this Ford is available here on eBay where the top bid so far is $18,300.

Ford would sell more than 1.3 million Mustangs from mid-1964 through the end of 1966. That meant everyone at the Blue Oval was working overtime to keep up with wild demand for the new “pony car.” More than 77,000 fastback Mustangs would be licensed as 1965 models or about one out of every seven ponies built that year. The majority of these cars were likely equipped with a 289 cubic inch V8 as is the case with the seller’s car. It’s paired with a 3-speed manual transmission, but the car hasn’t moved under its power in at least a decade.

The motor is partially disassembled and a set of 351 heads adorn the block now. Why the change was made isn’t clear, but the original heads will come with the car. The body is generally rust-free, but the burgundy paint is well worn. A newer gas tank was installed in the back, perhaps as part of an earlier effort to get the car going again.

We assume the Ford is mostly complete, so restoring this Mustang may not require any massive parts search. The standard interior, black in color, doesn’t seem to be troublesome with new upholstery and carpeting needed at a minimum. The odometer reading isn’t given, but that may not matter if this car is given an extreme makeover. Fastbacks and convertibles command more money on the resale market than coupes and NADA says a 2+2 in prime condition could be worth $70,000.

Looks clean from what you can see; suspect some buggery under the drivers side carpet, probably more. Hi bid has one feedback, suspect its a scammer. Good luck and happy motoring.
