Field Find: 1957 Dodge Power Wagon W-100

The Power Wagon was Dodge’s range of four-wheel-drive pickup trucks that were built from 1945 to 1980. Beginning in 1957, the designations W-100, W-200, etc. were created to differentiate ½ versus ¾ ton and so forth (D was used for 2WD). This ’57 W-100 looks to have been sitting outdoors for several years and was running not too long ago. The seller is fielding offers as he/she is not sure what it’s worth, but $7,000 is identified as an asking price here on craigslist and it can be found southeast of Grand Junction, Colorado. T.J. is staying busy cultivating tips like this for us!

Power Wagons were part of the Dodge portfolio for 35 years before retiring in 1980. After a 25-year absence, Chrysler revived the brand in 2005 where it’s still used with Dodge’s Ram 2500 ¾-ton 4WDs. Both civilian and military versions of the trucks were used for a time, with the latter being more utilitarian in appearance. The seller tells us that only a couple of hundred trucks like this were made, but that’s a statistic we can’t verify.

We’re not told what engine is under the hood here, but a 318 cubic inch V8 is likely, paired with either a 3-speed or 4-speed manual transmission. Since the truck hasn’t been running in a while, there’s no telling what it will take to remedy that. It may be as simple as a tune-up and fresh gas, or not. The body has an abundance of surface rust, and we can’t decide whether it’s green or orange or something in between in terms of color. But these are cool old trucks, and it would likely be worthwhile to include this one in the living again!

Might have worked on a peach farm – Grand Junction area is famous for that.

Those L Heads were an awesome engine. Pull a stump out of the ground with the right gearing. Helped win the war on two fronts. (the last war we won BTW)

Very Weird body style for a Power Wagon. The actual Dodge Civilian Power Wagon with the rugged heavy duty body, the flat head in-line 6 and the power take offs was produced until 1968.

This is the standard Dodge Truck look for 1957, a one-year-only facelift.

Very cool. Sweaty. I don’t think those fender flares are factory. I am wondering about parts availability on this. I don’t recall seeing another 4WD in this make. Is it NAPCO? You can bet that it is as tough as they come.

I Like the Owner added a front handle on the hood. and what’s going on with that 90-degree fitting mounted nicely on top of the air cleaner.??
Water Injector?? or a port for shooting starting fluid??
    Cool Truck.!!

There is a propane mixer sitting on top of the carburetor. That angle pipe is where you connect the propane supply pipe. Probably was dual fuel at one time. Don’t see the rest of the equipment.

The seller is correct about a couple hundred being made. In Don Bunn’s book, ” The Dodge Truck Story” he gives the yearly numbers. These were the Powergiant era trucks, made from 57 til 60. The engine looks like a 315. The front fenders on the Powerwagons were the same as the ones used on the D-500. The 4×4 was not Napco,it was Dodges own setup.

Love all trucks from this era, but I apoligize ahead of time. I am in my 50’s and my 1st thought when viewing this truck was the it could be tow “Mater” in the making from the movie “Cars”. Could most definitely be a great truck restored or rodded out IMO! For whatever that is worth. Thanks.
