First Year Project: 1973 Pontiac Grand Am

Upon first glance, this 1973 Pontiac Grand Am gives off more of a LeMans vibe, and that’s because the front end was swapped for a donor section from a Colonnade-era LeMans found in a boneyard after the original component had become brittle.  This seller states that this Poncho also spent more than four decades sitting idle, and while some work is needed, it is currently running, and the owner doesn’t seem to have unrealistic expectations about the value here.  Located in Fort Wayne, Indiana, this 1973 Pontiac Grand Am is listed here on eBay, with the opening bid of $2,299 yet to be placed.  Another option is to skip the auction and buy it now for $2,989.

Pontiac had high hopes for the Grand Am when it was introduced as a 1973 model, with a main focus on providing a luxurious feel for the driver to complement the sporty exterior and relatively spirited performance for the period.  While the body shared many components with the LeMans, the interior pieces were borrowed from the popular Grand Prix, and unfortunately, several of the parts in here will require attention.  I’d probably have to spend my first afternoon replacing that aftermarket steering wheel with a factory unit, then move on to other things like new carpeting and upholstery.

The seller reports that the Pontiac was a one-family-owned vehicle before his acquisition, and that the original buyer’s son parked it in 1984 after the automatic transmission failed.  Even after such a long hibernation and a dry gas tank, the seller says the 400 started right up after he got it home, and it’s also mentioned to have received some upgrades in the past, including a new cam and lifters.  However, after all this time of inactivity, it’s probably time to consider giving this one a complete mechanical overhaul to ensure it becomes a reliable driver again in the future.

The body appears to be in fairly decent condition overall, although there’s at least one dent on the hood, and the lower quarter sections are said to need replacing.  One very nice feature is the sunroof, which is said to operate like new and not leak.  Underneath, the rails appear to remain structurally sound, but the driver’s floor area is showing some rust.  There’s going to be a considerable amount of work facing the next owner, but for the price, I’m feeling this 1973 Pontiac Grand Am might be promising project material.  What do you think?
