Fix While You Drive! 1963 Ford Fairlane 500

Ford’s success at launching a compact car in 1960 led them to fill a second void in 1962 – the intermediate. The company rolled out a mini-me version of the Galaxie using the Fairlane name, which had been a full-size car since the 1950s. The vehicle sold well at nearly 300,000 units in its first year and 10% more in the second when the seller’s ’63 Fairlane 500 was built. The seller’s car appears good, but the photos provided don’t reveal the few ills we’re told the automobile has. Located near Boulder, Colorado, this daily driver (with potential) is available here on craigslist for $7,000. Bravo to Mike F. for yet another cool tip!

If the 1962 Fairlanes looked like scaled-down Galaxies, the mildly restyled 1963s were even closer. 2-door hardtops were popular, accounting for sales of almost 70,000 cars in 1963. 60% of them had a bench front seat, which includes the seller’s machine. We’re told it needs to be recovered and the carpeting replaced, yet the only two interior photos offered are of the back seat and dashboard.

This Ford has averaged 15 years per owner, and the seller has been its caretaker for the last dozen. While letting the Fairlane go isn’t a priority, we’re told the seller doesn’t have the time to manage the work the car needs at 135,000 miles (no garage queen here). The original owner sprung for a 260 cubic-inch V8, which this Ford has, having been rebuilt 11 years and 12,000 miles ago. But the transmission is old school – a “3-on-the-tree” manual. With an overdrive feature, we’re told this is one fun car to drive!

Mechanically, the Ford has been treated as an assortment of newer stuff.  They include suspension components, brakes, radiator, and a generator. We get the impression you could pilot this Ford anywhere, fixing the body and interior needs the seller tells us about as you go. The front fenders have some rust, and one of the bumpers has a nice dent in it. Yet, the Rangoon Red paint looks good (at least in the photos, which could be better). A few spare parts will go with the sale.

CL cars that are featured here on BF seem to be snapped up pretty quickly lately.

    First car I ever owned (as a 14 year old in 1972) was a black-n-white 63 Fairlane 500 with the 221ci small-block V8, one check-box below this one’s 260ci V8.

Wasn’t the 221 the very-first of the FoMoCo small block V8s, introduced in the 1962 Fairlane??
