Former V8 Roller: 1968 Chevrolet Camaro

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Chevy Camaro was in its second production year in 1968 and had quickly established itself as the Ford Mustang’s #1 competitor. The cars were little changed but would sell well at more than 235,000 copies. This ’68 Camaro is a roller that once had a V8 engine, according to the cowl tag. A lot of other stuff is broken or missing, so restoring it will require a lot of sourcing unless you think the $4,000 asking price is worth it for parts. Located in Norton, Massachusetts, this Chevy is available here on craigslist and is another cool tip from Michell G.!

if you set a 1967 and 1968 Camaro next to each other, the most noticeable differences are the ’68 has side marker lights and vent-free windows. 95% of all ’68 Camaro coupes came with a V8 engine in 1968, of which there were many choices. We’re not sure which one this car once had but the brake pedal and shifter indicate a 2-speed Powerglide automatic was paired with it. The paint and interior likely matched from the get-go, with a sea of blue or aqua at every turn.

The seller’s car looks as though it was parked outside and then picked over. The engine compartment is bare of most everything, including things like the radiator and master cylinder. While the glass is all there and intact, items like bumpers are also MIA. But the body and sheet metal may be relatively solid with “little rust” according to the seller and sound floors except for one small spot.

The interior has been worked through as well, although some of it looks relatively good like the back seat. We’re told the odometer quit working at 50,000 miles (actually 150,000), so this car’s owners likely got their money’s worth over time. If important to you, there is no title. Only a bill of sale dated from 1996, plus whatever paperwork the seller will cook up for you. Since there is no power source, this Chevy creates a clean slate to work with, if you want to go that route.

Nothing $50K worth of parts and labor can’t fix.

I’d say $50K is a good start. A project car like this can quickly snowball out of control, especially if you are doing a top notch build.

P R N 3 2 1.It probably had the turbo 350 trans not a slip and slide. It’s hard to see but if you look closely you can make out the the 3 and 2.The 1 is covered by the shifter. The staple shifter is all the way down to the last quadrant.Looks like someone’s parts car from a while back.Make a neat drag strip car as it looks pretty solid. 4k no way.2k for a solid roller 68 Camaro I could see.imo.glwts.

I could be wrong but I thought first five digits of the VIN and Trim tag should match. I have think VIN is a 6cyl and Tag is V8.

I’m pretty sure the middle digit on the trim tag was 4 on all 68-9s.

“95% of all ’68 Camaro coupes came with a V8 engine in 1968”?
    Not even close!
More than 1 in 4 coupes came with either strait 6!

It looks to me here that the delux door panels are more prone to cracking than
    the standard camaro door panels.

Restorable if rust free. Will need an interior. Color is cool..

I double checked and I was wrong on the trim tag matching the VIN. That said, if the internet can be believed the first 5 digits of the VIN indicate it as a 6cyl.

    12337 = Camaro 6cyl, 2dr. Sport Coupe

Once stripped you will need every body panel made to repair this turds hidden rust issues.

It’s a shame young people can’t pick up projects like this for a couple hundred dollars and get them started in the hobby.

Even if they could, there would be no time for that, being on the smart phone all the time – even crossing streets & sitting on the john!
Besides, what school today has auto shop? & what old car has navigation, video screens, & even power windows & working a/c to hold their interest?

95% of ’68 camaro coupes being V8’s is incorrect!
More than 1 in 4 camaros came with either the 230 or 250 strait 6.

Its got deluxe interior, was an AC car, with an SS hood, very interesting. Has some holes on fender too that could match up to SS emblems. I believe this is an SS car which probably came with a 350 engine since it had AC but no way to tell by the data plate. Well worth a look and probably a good buy.
