Foxbody Fun! 1987 Ford Mustang GT

The third generation of the Ford Mustang arrived in 1979. It replaced the Mustang II which had gone the way of a subcompact, so the new “Foxbody” Mustang tried to recapture some of the pony car’s original magic. This 1987 edition is the sportier GT hatchback and appears to be in great shape sans a working air conditioner. Located in Tucson, Arizona, this V8 pony is said to have only 42,000 miles. It’s available here on eBay, where the current bid is $1,025, a reserve is in play, but the Buy It Now ante is $15,900.

When the Mustang was redesigned in 1979, a new “Fox” platform was used. The “Foxbody” was a rear-wheel-drive unibody setup that was shared across several Ford and Lincoln-Mercury products, and the Mustang employed it through 1993. During this time, more than 2.5 million Mustangs were built. For the 1987 model year, nearly 160,000 ‘Stangs left the assembly line, half being hatches like the seller’s car.

This Mustang is said to run quite well, thanks in part to a fuel-injected 302 cubic inch V8 paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission (it has overdrive, too). A K&N air filter system has been added. Besides loads of power accessories, this Ford also has disc brakes on all four wheels and was set up for factory A/C, but a prior owner removed the compressor, so you’ll have to scare up another one. A souped-up exhaust system is also in play.

The car was treated to a respray in its original color and it looks great. The same can be said for the sweet matching cloth interior. The seller may not have had this Ford for long as he/she took it in trade for a pickup that was for sale. If you’re looking for a nice Foxbody Mustang, does this one float your boat?

A rear disc conversion is really common, often done in conjunction with upgrading to 5 lugs axles and front hubs.

This car has seen a lot of modifications, rear disk brakes, later model “pony” wheels, subframe connectors, exhaust, repaint without colored accents, removal of AC. That’s a lot of modification for a claimed 42,000 miles, which the seller hedges in his description.

Considering the rough lives most 5.0 Foxbody Mustangs lived, potential buyers should subject this car to a thorough in person inspection.

That GT badge on the left side of the deck lid is not factory either. LX identifying as a GT?

Something definitely off about this car. The incorrect GT badging on the rear deck lid is not present in earlier photos.

Nice Mustang. If it’s a GT clone the body kit looks authentic. Mechanically the GT and LX were the same anyway. I noticed those white face gauges too right away.

The VIN verifies it’s a GT.
