Full-Size Muscle Car! 1969 Chevrolet Impala SS 427

The Impala Super Sport was a staple of the Chevy line-up throughout the 1960s. It started as a performance car in 1961 and ended the decade as one with it being more about good looks in between. This ’69 Impala SS has a 427 cubic inch V8, the only way they came that final year, and is one of just 2,455 built. The seller says this California car has been sitting for many years and needs “gone thru” but it’s hard to fault what we see. Located now in Jupiter, Florida, this beast from the heyday of the muscle car is available here on eBay where just one bid has been cast at $10,000. Naturally, the reserve hasn’t been met.

Chevy conceived the Super Sport in 1961 to spice up the Impala and only built 461 copies to go fast in the first outing. The company changed its strategy the following year, making the SS more about its sporty appearance than speed (you could get one with an inline-6) and sales ballooned to more than 99,000 copies in 1962. Over the balance of the decade, SS badging would appear on a lot of other Chevy models and the Impala SS began to take a back seat. It would be retired after 1969, but the car would go out in style – finishing about where it started. The car came with a 427 as standard equipment, exclusive to the SS, and two versions were offered (390 and 425 hp). These cars were quick, even for their size.

We’re told that this ’69 SS is numbers matching and has the less ferocious version of the 427 (the only one you could get with factory air conditioning, which this seeming survivor has). The motor is paired with a TH-400 automatic transmission and a 12-bolt rear end (lots of torque). We’re told the machine “runs and drives ok” from sitting, so perhaps some tinkering is needed though the carburetor, alternator, and voltage regular are all new. The odometer reading is 44,000 miles, though no claim is made as to whether that is accurate.

According to the seller, the blue paint needs buffing (looks good now, but most of the pics are in the shadows). And there are three small rust spots, although we only see one. The two-tone white and black interior (bucket seats!) looks good but the headliner needs replacing and the seller is sending a new one along with the car. This is a well-optioned machine, including power windows which you normally don’t associate with a muscle car. Rear defroster, too (gadzooks!). Other than the original Impala SS of 1961, the ‘69s are probably the rarest you’ll find, in any condition.

I don’t think the grille came blacked out orignally, but it adds a sinister look to the front end. Personally, I’d want to spray the rally wheels argent and add trim rings to them. GLWTA!! :-)

Gentleman muscle ride. The look on outside gives it a Government vehicle. I bet went all clean up you sit on side of the road. People would slow down thinking it was a unmarked Trooper car! 😂 Wow another ride I would love to own. 🐻🇺🇸

Get it out of Florida before the rust gator gets to it!

I hope whoever buys it puts the grille and wheels back to their original appearance. This car deserves better than to look like a bored teenager’s weekend project.

On a different note, is anybody else having issues with Hyundai ads on this site that repeatedly unmute themselves?

Yes I am having the same issue with the ads. I don’t know if it the site doing this? I seen others sites doing this…. but when you join them. Poof! Ads dissolve and no issues. 🤔 HVAGDDY!

Got a 68 SS427 z24 z03 custom coupe l36 427 th400. 1778 z24’s were built in 68 2455 in 69.Grille shouldn’t be completely blacked out but looks cool this way.68 and 69 ss impala’s were poorly advertised because chevy knew the end was near for the imp ss due to poor sales.Lot of these impalas had their 427’s yanked for use in camaros novas and chevelles making them pretty rare cars when found #’s matching. Seller needs better pictures out of the shade in sunlight and better trunk pic with mat and boxes out.Door seam pics and close ups of lower quarters and fenders. Not sure of the color as it’s too light for Fathom blue. Nice car and probably rock solid underneath being a CA car. 35 to 40k car in today’s market imo.glwts.

I owned one of these, only being the dummy I was way back then, swapped the rear axle ratio for a 4:30, had some head work done, headers and had the trans beefed up, along with nitrous and some cheater slicks, it was a a pretty stout stop light racer. You sure don’t see many of these, and kind of wish I had kept that one.

The hot ticket in full size Chevys back then was the 427 Biscayne in full stripper mode..bench seat, rubber floor, no a/c, power steering or power brakes, dog dish hubcaps, 4-spd, 411 rear end, etc. And yea, that was back in the day when “run what ya brung” and 1/4 mile times at the drag strip were the primary way to judge hot cars.
