Garage Find: 1967 Chevrolet Camaro Rally Sport

Ford’s Mustang had a two-year head start on the rest of Detroit in terms of sporty compacts that would become known as “pony cars”. GM couldn’t respond until 1966, and American Motors did in 1967. Chrysler was already in the “pony car” market with the Plymouth Barracuda, but it didn’t give the Mustang much grief in the sales department. This first-year, 1967 Camaro is said to be a Rally Sport edition that has been passed from one family member to another. It will need some work but looks solid overall. Located in Luverne, Alabama, this Chevy is available here on craigslist for $7,200. Thanks go to Barn Finder Chuck Foster for this great tip!

The immediate success of the Ford Mustang in the Spring of 1964 caught the rest of the industry off guard. Chevy’s Corvair was too unorthodox to compete, and the Chevy II/Nova had no sex appeal, so the Bow-Tie engineers went to work to create a Chevrolet version of the Mustang. The Camaro went to market two years later and shared a lot of its initial underpinnings with the Chevy II, just as the Mustang had with the Falcon. The Camaro would become the Mustang’s closest competitor for years to come.

Chevrolet would go on to sell nearly 221,000 Camaro’s in 1967, a great showing though in the shadows of Ford which produced more than twice that many Mustangs. Close to one-third of Camaro output included option Z22, the Rally Sport Package, which cost an extra $105. An appearance ploy, the RS included front valance mounted parking lights, electrically operated headlight doors, rear valance mounted back-up lights, special grille styling, “RS” emblems in the radiator area, and a few other little odds and ends. The seller’s Camaro is said to have the RS package, but the photos provided don’t help show things off.

We’re told the car is being offered as an “emergency sale” of a one-family-owned vehicle that the seller has been unable to get around to fixing up. From the photos, it appears the Chevy has been pulled from a messy single-car garage and loaded onto a trailer, so we don’t get to see how the car has been spending its time in recent years. It may be wearing its original gold paint, which looks okay along with a vinyl roof. The interior doesn’t appear as nice and we’re not told what version of a non-running V8 is under the hood (327 maybe?). At 85,000 miles, this supposedly original car is a roller that will need some TLC.

The ad has the distinct odor of scam.

I’m only about a hundred miles from there, but I’m not going to waste 4 – 5 hours of my life to check it out.

      WARNING!

Alabama wasn’t a “car title” state until 1974. Prior to that you could prove ownership with a license plate registration in your name. If this car is being sold with a Bill of Sale only (no matching AL license registration), you may have a problem getting a title issued in another state.

This should have a 327. It was the smallest V8 available in 1967, and anything larger required the SS package. So, is it a 2-bbl or a 4-bbl?

Probably scam, Indiana phone number, but says from Alabama, several states away. Car is easily worth over 20k.

A scam for sure, but phone numbers don’t mean much anymore as people move and keep their numbers. It’s not like the days when all you had was a landline. I got my first cell phone I think in 1989 in VA, I moved to AL 11 years ago but kept my VA number.

Granada Gold, the same as my 67 Chevelle SS was, I just love this color, it screams 1960’s ! Hope it’s legit, it’ll be a beauty when it hits the road again !!

It is unfortunately a fake ad. It’s a real number, & the guy is pretty upset now at his phone blowing up all night. Too bad, it’s 5 hours away, but I would have been on the way.

Many years ago a friend of mine pranked his brother by placing an ad in the newspaper (remember them?) for an underpriced Corvette. Best part was “Call after 10pm.”
