This is the scene so many of us hope to find: a dusty, desirable car that hasn’t been sitting beneath an open roof for decades with rust holes the size of your fist in the A-pillar. The seller of this 1984 Nissan 300ZX has listed his storage unit find here on Barn Finds Classifieds with the last known registration stretching back to 1995. Fortunately, it appears this car was carefully stored as the bodywork and paint both look to be quite nice, with the light coating of dust the only indication that the car has been sitting for a while. The old-school California blue plates are another sign that this 300ZX has been stored safely away from road salt and the other elements that caused the demise of so many of these cars.
Of course, finding a car in storage is just one part of the battle; based on the pictures of it outside of the storage unit, it appears to still run as well. The black paint is in excellent condition, and given the propensity for this color to look completely trashed by swirl marks and environmental damage, it’s encouraging to see no such indications of major cosmetic flaws in the photos. In fact, it appears to shine up quite nicely, and the polished alloy wheels also present quite well. The 300ZX is equipped with the T-top roof panels and the naturally aspirated V6 engine, and the seller notes that new tires have been installed.
The interior is clean, aside from some dirt and grime in the driver’s seat upholstery. Hopefully, that will come out with some steam cleaning. The Z31 chassis Z car is equipped with the preferred five-speed manual, which isn’t a guarantee when shopping for one of these. Given its DNA was more oriented towards grand tourer than a raw sports car, it’s not unusual to see these equipped with an automatic transmission. The color scheme isn’t the best; usually, a deep red or black is the way to go if you’re trying to find one of these with the most eyeball appeal. Leather was also optional, but it can also appear quite tired by this point in the car’s life. Find some original matching floormats to get rid of those generic black carpet coverings.
The seller notes that the mileage is quite low, with under 40,000 on the clock. The details seem to provide ample evidence of this being a survivor, as the paint, wheels, and interior, not to mention the engine bay, are all far too clean for a high-miler. Throw in the fact that it’s never been modified and still has the California blue plates and it all adds up to a car that has escaped the typical fates for these sharp two-seaters: abused by “tuners”, killed by rust, or more often than not, both. The price is not unrealistic, but you’re also not likely to make much money on it if you’re looking for a quick flip – so just buy it to enjoy it! I think these Z31 cars will continue to be in demand for a while as the Radwood movement heats up – what do you think?
A bucket list car from my childhood. I appreciate that the seller cleaned the dust off to show the actual paint. Nice car though not highly optioned.
A few details stick out to me: missing the Datsun and Nissan badges on the hatch edge – only appeared on the 84s, Datsun badge went away for 85. Sits nicely snug over the factory wheels, definitely looks lower than stock. And the rocker moldings from the one-year-only 86 version are a nice add, but not stock; since they match, and the badges are missing, possible it’s had a repaint at some point? Appears to have the original muffler, and well preserved top to bottom. Seller is definitely asking for all the money, maybe he’ll get it. Makes me miss my white ’84 so badly!
Not a 240Z. Not a Vette. But still a nice two seater, three pedal, low miles car and not a bad price either especially considering similar contemporary alternatives.
Better change that timing belt before you even crank it!
Only post that makes sense ! Probably a lot of rubber things should be replaced.
Lots of missing details for a buyer to consider that should have been included in the ad.
Most importantly: Has there been any attempt to get this car running at all, or did the seller just wash off the dust and throw a For Sale sign on it?
