Glass Roof 5-Speed: 1984 Chevrolet Corvette

The C4 era of the Chevrolet Corvette is one that evokes two distinct responses from enthusiasts: it was either caught in the awful afterburn of the malaise era, or it is one of the most underappreciated muscle cars ever made. Whichever side of the fence you’re on, there’s no denying that clean C4s with all the right options are still ridiculously affordable, especially early cars like this 1984 model listed here on craigslist with some desirable options, including the glass roof panel and the Doug Nash 4+3 manual transmission, and a graphite leather interior. The seller is asking $15,700 and it shows just over 31,000 original miles.

My brother recently bought a C4 to use as an autocross car from an owner who had used it in a similar fashion. He and my nephew have had great fun with it, and when I asked him recently if he intended to keep it, I was surprised to hear him say yes. It wasn’t expensive to buy; it started and ran well every time they fired it up; it’s mildly entertaining and makes a great noise; and if he decides to sell it and later regrets it, it’s not exactly hard to find another one. The Corvette shown here is the same color but arguably in nicer condition, but it’s still not that expensive relative to the usability it offers.

They are great performers as just Friday night cruisers and as track weapons, and upgrading them to be formidable handlers on a road course is far from difficult. The aftermarket has supported C4s for eons, and you can build them into serious performers for not a lot of cash. At the same time, it’s important to note that the manual gearbox really does play a role in enhancing the C4’s appeal, which is why my brother drove to Connecticut for the one he has. The 4+3 gearbox has its quirks but the curb appeal is enhanced dramatically. The fact that this one has low miles, the optional glass targa panel, and three pedals even makes it mildly collectible, in my opinion, unlike your standard automatic C4.

Yes, the performance numbers were a bit grim for a model as storied as the Corvette, but they weren’t awful. 205 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque when paired with the manual transmission will still feel plenty lively in everyday traffic. Now, I loathe the description because it’s either written with AI or just dripping with car dealer marketing-speak; either way, it’s not good. Hopefully, the seller can show evidence of ongoing maintenance despite the low miles, and that the paint looks as good in normal light situations as it does in the waning sunlight of dusk as shown in these photos. So that’s 3 vehicles at that price?

“Priced to move at $15,700 – far below what pristine, low-mile C4s command today.” Ehhhh, no. A 3,100 mile 1991, the last and best year of the L98, just went for 16k on Bring a Trailer. A 12,000 mile 1984 recently sold there for 13k. And BaT tends to bring a pretty significant premium over what you might expect to get from Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. I don’t like coming on here and bashing prices, but cmon, man.

So I would probably put this around 8-10k, for the right buyer who has some kind of nostalgic connection to this particular year. The 1984 cars tend to be less popular than the later L98 and LT1/LT4 cars.

Move? Where? To the sellers garage where it will stay until he comes to his senses.

I’m in the camp of affordable sports/muscle cars. But I’ve see 92-96 model years with less mileage for less money. A super clean 84, I’d consider especially with the third pedal, but at no more than $10g.

I believe these had the crossfire induction system that was better off in a junkyard. That’s the first thing I’d replace.
