Grandfather’s Truck: 1992 Ford F-250

It’s a simple thing, but an OBS – or “Old Bodystyle” Ford F-Series truck is one of the more pleasing rigs to find in good, clean condition these days. It reinforces just how great this design was when it came out, and the staying power it has continues to impress me. When you see a truck like this 1992 Ford F-250 listed here on craigslist come up for sale, you already know it’s not hanging out long. The seller reports that it is loaded up with desirable factory equipment and is powered by the venerable 460 V8.

The asking price is $12,500, and the truck shows just 113,000 original miles, which already makes it a smoking deal. Over the last few years, many of us have noticed that the general quality of the things we buy is going down. Sure, things are cheaper, but they’re not better; cue the typical example of the washing machine or fridge that would outlive you if it was built before the 2000s. The same can be said for new vehicles which use lower quality materials, throw in a ton of infotainment we don’t need, and then inflate the MSRP to over $50,000. It doesn’t work, which is why trucks like this one are still so popular.

The seller, who is the owner’s grandson, notes that the Ford is a one-owner rig. Given what the new trucks look like and cost, it’s not a surprise that so many OBS F-Series are still with the original caretakers. The interiors are simple affairs, far from luxurious, but also incredibly functional and devoid of useless technology. If you want a vehicle that simply works, here’s your one-car solution. It also comes with dual gas tanks, so you’ll go farther than you’d expect with a somewhat thirsty V8 under the hood. And it still comes with the requisite power windows and locks.

A bed liner, likely installed since new, has kept the bed itself in good shape. I’m guessing there’s fairly mint paint underneath. Living in Denver, I’m also confident you’ll find little to no rust in this F-250, which can certainly render trucks from the northeast to the scrap heap given the quarters and cab corners are as vulnerable as any other vintage truck exposed to road salt. The 460 produces great power (230 b.h.p.) and prodigious amounts of torque (390 lb.-ft.) so it will do whatever job you need done with ease. All in all, a great truck at a very fair price.
