Grandma’s Car: 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu

The owner of this 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu purchased it off a lady of more mature years, and it would definitely appear to be a solid and original survivor. With so many of these Chevelles having been modified over the years, it is nice to find an example that is original and unmolested. It is now ready to head off to a new home, and while bidding has been solid, it hasn’t seen the reserve met up to this point. The Malibu is located in Bellflower, California, and has been listed for sale here on eBay. Bidding is currently sitting at $12,100, but as I said, the reserve has not been met. However, there are 84 people who are currently watching the listing, so you have to wonder whether any of them might be considering sneaking in with a last-minute bid.

Garnet Red paint with a Black vinyl top is always going to be a great combination, and that’s what we find with this Malibu. The first thing that I noticed is just how clean this car is. It has spent its life in California, and the benefits of this are immediately obvious when you go searching for rust issues. There are a few small spots in the lower fenders, but that really appears to be about it. The owner supplies a photo of the trunk, and the pan looks to be as solid as a rock. The owner indicates that the rest of the floors are just as good as the trunk, which is great news for prospective buyers. The external trim and chrome all appears to be present, and its condition is definitely one of the highlights of the vehicle. It has a great shine to it, and as is the case with the glass, it is pretty hard to find anything much to fault.

The Malibu is a numbers-matching car and rolled off the line with a 307ci V8, 3-speed Hydramatic transmission, and power steering. This combination wasn’t the most potent, but with 200hp on tap, it could still find its way down the ¼ mile in 17.2 seconds. The chances are that this was performance enough to satisfy all bar a few ladies of advancing years. The engine bay presents very nicely for a vehicle of this age, and the owner indicates that the Malibu runs and drives as well as it looks. Included with the vehicle all of its original paperwork, along with the Protect-O-Plate.

The good news with the Chev continues when we take a look around inside. The interior is completely original and unmolested, which is no surprise to me given the car’s ownership history. It is trimmed in black vinyl, and it’s hard to find any real faults with the upholstered surfaces or carpet. There are a couple of issues to consider, including multiple cracks in both the wheel and the dash pad. However, a bit of a search revealed that replacement pads are available for between $190 and $300, depending on the quality. Steering wheels are a little on the expensive side at around $290, so as much as I don’t like them that much, if I replaced the wheel, I would be inclined to fit a wrap to protect it. On a similar theme, I would probably also treat the dash to a cover if I went to the trouble and expense of replacing the pad. I have used these for years, and they keep the pad looking brand new. Otherwise, there really is nothing much that needs addressing inside the car.

This 1969 Chevelle Malibu is about as clean and original as you are ever likely to find. Its needs are minimal, and it can be driven and enjoyed as it currently stands. It looks like it would be a great classic to own, and with values on these continuing to increase, it could also be a pretty decent long-term investment as well. That has all of the makings of a winning combination.

Holy carp! That engine, trunk and seats appear darned near perfect! That’s also a lot for a base model as I’m betting the reserve is around $15k.

At 9:15pst, it’s back down to $13,500. A few years ago a friend was auctioning a 56 F100, several bidders placed bids, then retracted them. They were trying to find out his reserve, once they did, they made offers trying to get him to end the auction early.

I love to see cars like this, especially Chevy, that haven’t been butchered and/or turned into fake SS’s. And I am so over added-on cowl induction hoods.👅 Even saw one on a Chevette.

Cowl induction hood for a Chevette? Cool, but I’m waiting for a stinger hood.

This guy sells a lot of cars on eBay. He usually has two to four listed at any given time, check out his completed listing. This site has featured his cars several times in the past. He has a knack for finding good cars and trucks.

I’d bet the reserve is at least $15,000 as mentioned above. That is still a reasonable price and someone will pay it, sooner or later.

Nice car, but 2 things I’d want in mine & that would be a 327 or larger engine & A/C.

No need to make an SS clone out of it when a COPO427 Chevelle clone wouldn’t be decorated with a bunch of shiny badges and foolish stuff….oh yeah, this car is done in. I just know it. Dunt-Du-Duhh!!

A red-over-black Chevelle without at least a 396? No way. I say somebody blew the original 427 & Muncie then swapped this in. I watch Barrett-Jackson. You can’t fool me.

Nothin’ wrong with a 307. Considerably more HP than an 80’s 350! Add headers and 4bbl…

It’s been repainted. All ’69 Malibus had bodyside pinstriping and were silver painted under the lower side molding. Check out the brochure online if you’re a doubter.

Its also had the front and rear seat covers replaced, and most likely the carpet as well. With the dash pad and steering wheel as tired as they are, I’m guessing this car was not all that pampered, and was well-worn cosmetically before it got “fluffed.”

Nice car! I would’ve preferred a 300 with a 6 cyl. but this combo will do. It’s great to see one that hasn’t become a ‘Numbers Matching’ SS 396. Interesting that there are more ’69 Super Sports out there now than were ever built…

Hagerty evaluation says 12 grand for #3 condition.

The paint appears mottled on passenger side, or is that bad lighting ?

The passenger quarter is a different color as well.

It’s gonna be an SS ASAP, I’ll bet my last dollar, someone said the bid went hi, bit 13,000 is good, gonna still dump a ton of money into a 51 yr old car

Besides my rally wheel and dual exhaust comment, those red heater hoses have to go, and also spend a couple extra dollars to get some length so you can run them back through the bracket on the fenderwell…. red hoses drive me crazy.

Nice clean body for a great looking car I would have to use the 307 for a new anchor for my boat and look for a big block and set it up in front of a Tremec 5 speed!!!
