The Dodge A-100 (and A-108 with a longer wheelbase) was a “cabover” panel van built by Chrysler from 1964 to 1970. Next to the VW van, it may have been the most popular of its kind in the 1970s with the hippie movement (“love and peace, baby”). The seller’s van, possibly from 1967, is the Sportsman edition which means it had side windows for passengers. It has been buried deep in the woods for some time in Kittery, Maine, and is offered primarily for parts here on craigslist. The asking price is $1,000 and you have to pull it out yourself. Henry Reining spotted this tip for us!
These vans were not the first of their kind on the market as the Ford Econoline and others got there first. As a “forward control” vehicle, the front seats were moved over the front axle and the engine resided in a giant housing between them. The A-100 was of unibody construction, which doesn’t bode well for the underpinnings of the seller’s Dodge from being in the dirt and leaves for who knows how long. We’re told the engine is blown and it’s a V8, which could be the 318 cubic inch version (though many were equipped with a Slant-Six).
The viability of this two-tone van must be in question. No photos are provided of the interior, so we don’t know how good or bad things may be in there. We’re told the odometer is broken, so the mileage on this Dodge is unknown before it was put out to pasture, likely years ago. Also, the title is missing so a bill of sale will have to suffice. The listing was posted by a friend of the owner, and he/she prefers that the buyer be within 100 miles of the van’s location. Would you take this van home for a Grand?
No.
Forget it!, but would love to a video of this getting pulled out in 1 piece or pieces.
My hats off to whoever is able to dig this out and pull it out of that hole. I would be surprised if theres any floors left.
Perhaps it isn’t buried at all? What you see is now the bottom? That’s why there are no pictures of the floor…
Probably a 318 short block…
more likely a 273 if its original
I wouldn’t be surprised if you could lift it and there’s nothing left of what cannot be seen.
The seller’s request for local buyers is probably unnecessary. I can’t imagine anyone traveling 100 miles to retrieve what’s left of this van, let alone over 100 miles. Is the seller asking for $1000 or paying $1000?
So it’s a garden shed with a dirt floor.
The seller knows if u pull it out the bottom will drop out ..
Why didn’t the person open the rear barn type door for a photo? I think we know the answer….
“Why didn’t the person open the rear barn type door for a photo?”
Probably out of fear. There could be raccoons or snakes or banjo playin folk livin in there.
Why would you pay good money for it? I don’t see how you could use it,even for parts.
I don’t recommend purchasing this van.
I recommend the owner open one of the back doors to make easier access for homeless raccoons, woodchucks and squirrels. Perhaps a livestream could be set up and the owner could make the $1K off of online views.
“And this week, on Van Critters…”
This takes the cake..
If I was close I’d pay $100. Bring the excavator and skid-steer, pull it out and make a play house for the Grandkids. Only thing a Dodge is good for anyway. I actually sold one of these in so so condition a couple years ago for about $1500. It could have used a few parts but the engine ran.
Considering that the body is touching the ground I am afraid that this likely now has the Fred Flintstone conversion.
Scrap
If the van’s rockin, don’t come knockin…
I’m not sure why they say “local buyers within 100 miles only”. If it were mine I would not put any limits on potential buyers as there might not be many of them. The paint that I can see looks decent so it might have looked pretty good before being left to rot. Commenting to get updates, so good luck to seller and potential buyer.
I’ll offer 100..Peso that is.
Free dirt and leaves with this van!!
