Heavy Duty Package: 1974 Ford Bronco Ranger

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

At first glance, I was surprised that anyone has bid on this 1974 Ford Bronco. It is a first-generation Bronco that was built from 1966 to 1977. This particular example is located in Duluth, Minnesota and is listed here for sale on eBay. With two days remaining in the auction, the Bronco has 18 bids and has been bid to only $5,300. There were 25,824 Ford Broncos sold in 1974.

This interior of this Bronco must smell because it is evident that it has water damage and mold. The carpet and seats are trashed and show signs of mildew. The brown dash does not look too bad but it has a crack in it. Everything will need to be replaced, if this Bronco is to be saved. The seller states that the Bronco is a 1974 model but the title shows it to be a 1975 Ford Bronco.

The Bronco was optioned with the 302 cubic inch V8 which came with a 2 barrel carburetor and three-speed manual transmission. The engine is not running and the Bronco will need to be towed to begin the restoration. The transmission is shifted via a column-mounted shifter. Other nice features include optional dual fuel tanks, limited slip differentials, big 11″ brakes and power steering. The front windshield, rear window and a side pane appear to be broken. The Bronco is also equipped with drip rail chrome molding with is said to be rare on these models.

Now for the bad news. Rust has endeared itself to almost every body panel on this Bronco. The truck is going to need new rockers, new tailgate, new hood and floorboards. Several internal panels including the door jams show rust too. The frame is said to be solid but it covered in surface rust. Fortunately, the Bronco comes with a tow bar so it can be hauled around. I don’t know if this one will be parted out but I hope it can be restored.

No link to the ad.Seems like every old Bronco is
for sale these days at crazy prices.
Maybe you should have a separate area for them.

    “…a separate area…”
    n. w. paddock?
’74 had the highest production (25,000+) but the ’77 (last yr) was the ‘heavy duty”. I would call this 1 ‘fancied up” rather than ‘heavy duty’ (C the tweed rear side boards, all the chrome’n the white stripping outside).
I like the bent8 but would swap out the transmis depending (aod/4/5 speed) on application, get discs up frnt. Just got the 4.1 and NV3550 in mine after 38 yr work ‘truck’.

Yep. If I was going to build a small Bronco (or a Jeep), I’d definitely go with a high quality glass tub like this. Personally, I’ve never cared for the small Broncos, Scouts or Jeeps so I won’t be doing one in the foreseeable future. However, I’m glad that those that like them will have no problem finding restoration parts for their projects.

I think if the price stays somewhere around the 6,0000 area this is a good buy. Sure there is a ton of rusty panels but with replacement aftermarket metal it’s not a big deal. And seeing what the old Bronco are going for the work would be well worth it, I’ve taken on worse projects.
