Hertz Alternative: 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback

This ’65 Mustang is the personal ride of our friend Adam over at Unobtanium. He pulled it out of a barn in Indiana several years ago and did the work needed to make it a driver. It is now located in Valatie, New York and can be found here on eBay where bidding ends soon!

We recently featured a Shelby Hertz Rent-a-Racer. It’s obviously more valuable, but Adam’s car has a similar vibe and will end up going for a lot less. Which do you think could provide more smiles per dollar though?

Unlike the Shelby Rent-a-Racer, this Pony has a straight-six. The odometer shows 43,950 miles but Adam isn’t sure if this is accurate or not. They have replaced the fuel lines, brake lines, and muffler so it should be ready to go. If this was your car, what would you swap in place of this six-banger? The car has already received several modifications in anticipation of a V8…

The interior is pretty nice and features bucket seats with a wood-rimmed steering wheel. A bit of cleanup and this interior would show pretty well. The rear seat just needs a quick wipe down but looks good. Looks like there’s some spare change back there too… bonus!

As mentioned earlier, the car has been upgraded with some heavy-duty parts in anticipation of a V8 swap. It has a 289 rear end along with a 5-lug conversion front and rear. New shocks along with a new front suspension make it a blast to drive. So which engine would you drop in there?

I’m sure Adam is going to miss this one. Fastbacks are super desirable and this one looks like a lot of fun! What do you think?

If this car is as solid as it looks I’d try to find a modified small block Ford and get to driving it.

Looks like the floors have been patched andthere’s some rust showing underneath, Left quarter looks bad. I think this may have been owned by the owner of a body shop in NY. Don’t forget this is a new yawk car. Looker over good. Hertz clone with a six banger, get the v8 ready!!!

I like Mustangs, as my brother had three of them. A 65, and two 66’s. Having said that, for all of you readers that gripe about Porsches and Grand Nationals on the pages, I count five Mustangs in the last 15 posts. Again, I like them, just sayin’

Please…….stop with the “HERTZ STYLE….poor condition black paint and gold stripes leave THIS CAR far from putting the HERTZ name in the description.

Decent car. Usually total rot buckets. I am going with 143K miles and somewhat cared for. If it is 43K miles, I am not seeing the love.

6 cyl auto is not terrible BUT in my opinion any Mustang Fastback needs a V8. V8’s need a manual trans. Would be a good candidate for a resto mod or a clone. Although I would have to check the market, as a GM guy, not sure where the money is at on this car. Still probably able to go buy a V8 fastback for half the money DONE than this car will bring after restoration. Tough call these days. Unless you are doing 80% of the resto work with your own hands…..even at that the parts, materials and outsource items will be more in total than the car is worth, again when done, not counting YOUR TIME and the buy in $.

Gotta love “Hertz Style”,,,Gold stripes on a black car does ,make it anything Hertz,,, but that’s ok. Perhaps if I put LeMans stripes on my GT I can say GT500 style.
With that negative un necessary comment out of the way this is a really nice car that can be likely completed by most backyard mechanics ( with a little outsourcing). Drop in a 289, a 4 speed, a set of torque thrusts , do a little body work and you’re in business! Can be a great car

I love old school engines, and if it was a real V8 car, I’d say as big of a Ford I could wedge between those shock towers, it since it’s a conversion, I’d go w a new Coyote engine, throw a nice 5 or 6 speed in it, and upgrade the suspension

Maybe at one time in it’s life, it drove by a Hertz car rental, that’s about it.

Back in around 1970 I bought a 1965 Maroon Mustang. It was only the base model with 3 speed floor shift and the 289 2 barrel carb with the ford mustang hubcaps with the 3 point spinner faux knock offs. I remember installing extra taillights for that Shelby look, Hood pins and ran an induction hose from the air cleaner to a 21/2 inch hole I put under the wiper blade grill. I also added rocker panel G T stripes to dress it up some what. This guy that has this black fastback might as well get a pro body shop and repair that terrible body work and the floors etc. and repaint it. Also get the missing centers for the wheel rims. He neglected to steam clean the engine and compartment in all those years he said he had the car. go figure. You might as well finish what you started unless there’s something seriously wrong hidden some where and he expects top dollar for this basic 6 banger.

yea James like I said I believe this car is owned by a body shop. The Ice cream place where this is parked is owned by the owners of a good sized local body shop, Caveat emptor. NY rust belt car.

Cmon Dave, I know you and I know you live in NY state. You can hear the cars rusting here in NY. Not sure Indiana is any better. If you put a car in storage that’s been driven in the winter, its gonna be rotten!

Looks like the bidding has ended at 18 Grand and no sale. Thats pretty good$$ for a 6 cyl that will require another 5-6 Grand to finish up.
