Hidden for 30 Years: 1978 Ford Bronco

Bidding has taken off for this 1978 Ford Bronco after hovering below $10,000 for a few days. It’s impressive, too, considering the truck hasn’t run in 30 years and we never get a single picture of it not sitting in a dank warehouse environment. The Bronco used to be the sort of truck that you could buy for cheap if it was a later model; the buy-in was pricier with the early models. Those days are gone, as this ’78 is now going for over $10,600 with no reserve here on eBay. Even with the decades of inactivity, it looks to be complete with no evidence of having been previously torn down for a restoration that has since stalled out. Just be sure to bring your dustbuster.

The photos don’t tell a great story, but the seller contends he found it in a garage he cracked open, for whatever reason. These are great stories to lose yourself in, as you begin to wonder if that old cement building down the block that hasn’t been open for eons has some forgotten classic sitting inside. The chances of this happening and the vehicle being somewhat desirable are incredibly low, but stranger things have happened. All told, it had to be a thrill to peer into the gloomy darkness and see a forgotten square body sitting there in the dark. Based on the photos, the interior has seen some disassembly, as the driver’s side door panel is missing. There’s a split in the seat, but overall, the upholstery is certainly usable as-is.

The dust is incredible. It’s thick, and coats every surface. The rear window looks to have been left in the down position, which makes you wonder if the previous owner intended to return to the Bronco far sooner than this. The new belt sitting on the hood also suggests plans were being made to show this truck some love before life got in the way. It seems likely that the building was sold or the Bronco was left in storage with bills unpaid; regardless, it’s safe to say the last caretaker isn’t coming back. I can’t quite tell what’s sitting in the back of the Bronco, whether they are interior parts or just junk tossed in through the open window.

The engine bay looks clean, perhaps even cleaner than any other part of the truck. The seller himself admits he started working on the truck after finding it – perhaps that’s why the door panel is missing – but that he’s not going to finish it, either. The underside photos show what looks like a very clean frame but we can’t get a good sense of the body’s condition. The fenders on these trucks are quite susceptible to rust, so I’d like to get confirmation that they haven’t rotted out. The Bronco is located in Grand Rapids, Michigan if you’re nearby and want to check it out. Have you ever found a vintage car or truck in a similar environment?
