Jumpin’ two-stroke smoke, Batman! Unless you were just born or have been living somewhere without TV or the internet, all of us have heard of Batman and Robin. Having debuted in 1939, the dynamic duo is still around today, and so are replica vehicles that are copies of the ones they used in their TV show and movies. This 1969 Yamaha YM-1 Batcycle is listed here on eBay in Conway, South Carolina, and the seller is asking $47,000, or you can make a bat offer.

How about that first photo showing Dick Grayson’s, I mean, Robin’s little Bat-Kart? That’s as cool as it gets, at least for the next owner, maybe not for the guy wearing tights and a cape who had to drive that little go-kart while Batman got the motorcycle. We’ve seen one Batcycle here on Barn Finds nine years ago (some cape-wearing weirdo wrote it up, as usual), and that one was based on Yamaha’s YDS-3, a 250-cc twin, but this one is based on the YM-1 305-cc twin. This Cars & Coffee superstar was made by a company out of New York called BatRodz, using the original molds from the TV bike. There are a few rambling around on the auction circuit (Barrett-Jackson, Mecum, etc.), but this one is priced a bit higher than recent ones have sold for.

This is one incredible replica. Our own Adam Caped-Crusader Clarke showed us a Batmobile a few days ago here on Barn Finds, and owning both of these vehicles (or all three with the go-kart) would be a feather in anyone’s bat-cap. You can see the amount of work the creator of this Batcycle did in recreating all of the details, including Robin’s sidecar housing the go-kart. Please click on the eBay link and see the couple of dozen or more photos the seller has loaded. The only thing holding it back, in my opinion, is that there’s a bit of surface rust on a lot of the fasteners, especially on the engine cases. I’m not sure why that is, but I know South Carolina can be super humid.

The surface rust really should be cleaned up in order to take this batcycle to the next level. I wonder if Bruce Wayne can sync up his batphone to the batscreen? Probably not. That’s a nice detail, though, but this is the only “interior” photo showing the driver’s position. They do show the very cool little go-kart that has its own parking spot and a 55-cc engine, so Robin can at least attempt to catch the colorful cast of characters causing chaos in Gotham City. Here’s a campy (did I need to say that?) video on YouTube showing the Dynamic Duo, along with the Batcycle and go-kart in action, on their way to the Batcopter, probably on their way to bat-lunch and then a bat-weekend-in-Santa-Barbara. Sadly, Adam West and Burt Ward didn’t get to actually use the Batbycle or go-kart; stunt doubles rode them as they were deemed far too dangerous for the stars of the show.

The first Batcycle was a ’59 Harley-Davidson, quite a departure from the second one, the 250 Yamaha, or even the last one, a 305 Yamaha, as shown here. Of course, gorgeous crime-fighter Yvonne Craig, i.e., Batgirl, also had a Yamaha-based bike, the Batgirl Cycle, which I believe was only used in the unaired pilot episode of season three. Robin’s go-kart, as seen above, is really tiny, and you have to crouch down and ride it like a horse, which is more than a little awkward. I mean, you have yellow tights on in the first place. The original kart was powered by a 55-cc Yamaha engine, although we don’t have any photos showing the engine of this one, and the seller doesn’t mention it.

The motorcycle we do know about, and being a lifelong Yamaha fan/fanatic, how I’ve never owned a YM-1 305-cc two-stroke twin is bat crazy. I’m assuming the Yamalube oil-injection system is working, and the seller says it fires up and rides great, as does the go-kart. This would be so fun to own, mainly for car shows and vintage bike shows more than for actual riding, or crime fighting. Are there any Batman (or Robin, or Batgirl) fans out there?

I can hear the 2 stroke now..in my mind.
I STILL have the Batman theme going thru my head from the other day!!! This is cool, and thank you Scotty for posting the link to the video and getting to see the go cart side car in action too. What a cool setup that is!!! I like the single pod speedometer on this Yamaha with the tack in it. Neat find Scotty!!!
Bet writing this up was one you had a lot of fun with, Scotty and understandably so. That 305cc smoker was a fast ride in its time-a judges son in town had one, said he had it up to 120! I doubt seriously it was THAT fast, but it’d undoubtedly felt like it with those bicycle tires and drum brakes, though that front brake was a crazy quick stopper for its time IIRC. The kickstart was easy to get used to-if you previously had owned a Bultaco Pursang, that is.
Another cool bookmark in the BF encyclopedia.
Thank you!
I really like how Nevadahalfrack said, “Another cool bookmark in the BF encyclopedia.” Hit the nail on the head.
Maybe Barnfinds can come out with a ” best of” category.
You guys are way too kind to ol’ ramblin’ SG. Thanks! I’m a Yamaha nut, I really need one of these, but without the extra $43,000 worth of gear on it.
Speaking of kickstarting the YM-1, if you check out the YouTube video, at the 40-second mark is where they uncover the Batcycle, and you can see Batman (whoever it was, Adam West or his stunt double) kick-start it.
And was it just me or was it dubbed to sound like an old HD as they got onto the pavement?
$47k??? Don’t think so!! Cool but not at $47k. A lot of other vehicles I could buy with that kind of money.
