There’s only a handful of cars from the luxury segment that has managed to ride the “rad” wave of vehicles from the 80s and 90s that are beginning to appreciate, at least in sentiment among younger enthusiasts. The Lincoln Town Car is such a model, and while I’m not exactly sure what makes it a winner among impassioned fans of the early 90s, there’s no denying that a nice one of these is still a looker. This 1993 Town Car is one that would definitely get more than a few thumbs up at a Radwood show, as it’s a nicely presented Jack Nicklaus edition, complete with the green carpet and interior accents. Find it here on craigslist with 74,000 miles and an asking price of $8,500.
While the Jack Nicklaus trim is certainly a bonus, this was purely a cosmetic package that didn’t affect the actual performance or handling characteristics of America’s favorite land yacht. Many of them were painted green with white tops; this is one of the few that escaped with a white body. The bulk of them had landau-stlye roofs, and in retrospect, it’s amazing to think the big luxury manufacturers were still pushing the vinyl roof option on customers. The Nicklaus cars got badges and the aforementioned green carpeting, along with white leather seats with green accents. The gold trim of this car was either later add-on or a factory install, but it wasn’t part of the package.
The badge is a great reminder of how influential a golfer like Nicklaus still was at this time, especially among buyers of a certain age. You think back to the Bill Blass editions from previous generations of Lincoln vehicles and it strikes you how major brands’ affiliations with top-tier professional golfers has largely disappeared; from what I can recall, Tiger Woods was the left professional golfer to get in to the car marketing business, and as his star has waned, there doesn’t appear to be an up-and-comer with the same visibility who would add star power to a major automotive brand’s marketing efforts. The seller indicates he is the original owner of this specimen, and that the window sticker is included with the sale.
That window sticker shows that the Town Car retailed for a heady $40K in 1993, which blows my mind as much as realizing professional golfers used to sell cars. Put that price in today’s terms and you’re forking over nearly $76,000 for a plush ride and acres of space, not to mention the pride of knowing your favorite golfer gave your land yacht his seal of approval. The condition of the white leather is impressive for a non-time-warp specimen, which speaks to how the Town Car has been maintained. These aren’t as easy to find as you’d think in good shape, so this one seems worthy of a look if you’ve been hunting for one. Thanks to Barn Finds reader Pat L. for the find.
Needs a golf bag door. And maybe a green jacket?
Not being a Lincoln collector I have no idea what the market is for 1993 Town Cars. Being the Jack Nicklaus edition makes this car a corner case aka much limited market.
in 1992 My Neighbor bought A brand new town car.It was $19,500. His acct told him either pay that amount in tax or buy a brand new American car!!
Good tax policy to create American jobs.
AAAAAAAAAAAAnd it’s gone
Although I collect AMCs, My daily drivers are all Panther platform cars and I have flipped several low mileage Town Cars. My drivers are all high mileage ones, my current TC is a Long Wheelbase with 330,000 miles, my oldest Panther is a 1997 ex NYC taxi with 700,000 on it. This car is the nicest of the nice and i wold have shot for $10,000 for it. i’m sure he got his price. These cars are lovely to own. The final generation 2003-2011 is the last and best version of the “real” American full frame RWD V8 car.
A friend of mine while having a conversation about golf one day at work, had an interesting story. His father back in the early 60’s picked up a hitchhiker while up driving up in the bay area of California. The hitchhiker was on his way to the Pebble Beach Open Golf course to find a job as a caddy. He informed my friends father to remember his name when he became famous, his name was Jack Nicklaus
Dates might be a little off. 1956 or 7 more likely
