Jolly Green Giant: 1976 Cadillac DeVille

There’s no getting around it, this 1976 Cadillac is a lot of car for your dollar. Listed for sale here on eBay, it is located in Wickliffe, Ohio. It comes with a clear title and a BIN price of $6,999. There is also the option to make an offer on it.

While the seller states that this DeVille is not perfect, I personally think that it is in good condition for its age. The color is really interesting, and that sort of pastel green is a shade that I would associate more with the 1980s than the 1970s. Regardless, the car does look to be straight and free of any rust or corrosion. The addition of the protector across the nose of the car has minimized the chances of stone-chipping on the most vulnerable part of the car.

Looking at the interior makes me think that I may have lived in houses that were smaller than this. Having said that, the interior looks rather comfortable and to be in generally good condition. There are some marks on the rear seat arm-rest, some stretching of the material on the driver’s seat and there’s something a bit weird going on with the driver’s seat-belt. Apart from that, it looks good.

This DeVille is fitted with all of the electrical accessories that we associate with Cadillac. The seller is a bit vague in this area, especially with regards to the heater and air conditioning. They are unsure as to whether they function as the fan doesn’t come on. I’m surprised that they haven’t followed up on that.

Under the hood nestles a V8 with a capacity of a “mere” 500ci. That’s a lot of engine capacity there, and naturally, due to the luxury status of the vehicle, it delivers its power via an automatic transmission. The seller states that the car runs and drives nicely. Engine capacity sounds enormous, especially for those of us raised in a country where about the biggest engine we ever saw was 390ci. However, the Cadillac weighs 5,000 lbs so it needs the capacity and the torque that goes with it to perform. It might not be a jet, but I can guarantee that it is going to be quiet, relaxed and luxurious. After all, that’s what this car is all about.

In these modern and enlightened times, there will be people out there who will say that the best thing that we could do with a car like this Cadillac would be to scrap and recycle it. To me, that’s just missing the point of this car. It’s in nice condition and is a great example of a 1970s luxury car. We need to preserve cars like this because they are part of our history and our heritage. Scrapping a car like this would be like cutting up antique furniture because we need the fire-wood. I hope that this car goes to a good home.

Your car is stunning! I have the 1979 Phaeton edition, Cotillion white, blue top in this model. I love the model and absolutely love the ride of these old Caddies.

Now THAT’S the one to have ! Perfect color combo, and I’m not normally fond of white cars. But the blue Cabriolet top just really makes is special. Nice ride, and ENJOY!!

My old man had a Caddy like this. It was a tank. He had to sell it because my mom had a hard time opening and closing the door. The doors weighed a ton.

Like most GM vehicles I usually prefer the models with round headlights. One day I will get around to finding a digital copy of the last Caddy I owned, a 1974 Fleetwood.

I love these big Cadillacs! Many years ago I had a 76 SdV, Silver/Gray, with Blue leather interior. LOVED LOVED LOVED it [save for the time the fuel tank ran dry in mid-January in NY .. that was a LOOOOOOONG walk!!]
Tho I prefer a 4 door [a Fleetwood would be ideal!], I’d take this lovely lady home without question

The word to describe this cars performance would be disappointing.

I don’t see a point of using so much gas for only 150 HP to move that huge car.

This was even worse in the hearse and ambulances.

Having said that, somebody kept this car in pretty good condition, which is not easy for this model.

I agree with Booya, it does need white wall tires. It is not a professional car after all.

Well, you didn’t buy this car for performance, I too found that out with the old mans( even with air cleaner removed) Driving that car was like sitting on your couch, it literally floated down the road, probably because it weighed almost 5,000 lbs. It’s no wonder my old man liked them, and kept buying them, until he couldn’t anymore. They are fantastic cars.

I don’t mean performance per se.

I will compare this 500 with 150 horsepower to the 472 from 16970 with 375.

If you are going to use the gas, which they both use about the same, I want the power the car should have.

It’s true the engines were de-tuned at this point but the actual horsepower is 190, which still isn’t great, but 360 ft/pds of torque gets these beasts moving nicely off the line.

I had a ’76 just like this except mine had leather seats. These are magnificent cars and a joy to drive.

Back when Cadillacs were distinguished, big, safe, comfortable, and had class and style. Today, they’re just overpriced sports cars.

I disagree, Nick. Cadillac is now at World Class status, being brought there by a brilliant group of engineers. Yes, they are expensive, but finally, you get what you pay for. The CTS-V just makes my head spin. Such performance groups, like Hennessy, upgrade your CTS-V to 700+ HP. Pretty nice Caddy.

The ATS is the best BMW 3-Series beater no one is buying. Pity, really.

W9BAG, Cadillac has gone in a very different direction since Pontiac was killed off.

Cadillac is now the performance division and not the luxury division.

As an older man, there isn’t a Cadillac model I would buy to cruise around.

Also as an older man now, I understand why older people bought the big soft riding barges. Those don’t exist anymore.

        I won’t ever buy a re-badged anything.

We owned one exactly the same color as this one many years ago. Also had a gold ’76 Coupe at the same time. Gas hogs, but what awesome rides! :)

Gorgeous car Tony. Get this, I bought my wife a 78 coupe from the dealer used. It was his wifes personal car. Nice, solid white, blue inside. Anyways my wife being the race car driver that she was…..pulled out in front of a 79 model F150. It spun her in a 360 circle and the car landed in the yard across the street. Left rear quarter panel damage was all on the Caddy. No Joke, the frame was broke in half on the Ford Pkup. Nobody hurt….so had to smile. Caddys are Tanks. Max yours is Gorgeous too. I only had the 1 White one myself. Keep the hobby alive guys.

I once saw an early 80s Coupe De Ville have a head on collision with a mid 70s Plymouth Duster. The Duster was crushed up to the windshield, and the Cadillac suffered a crinkled license plate. That’s all. The old lady who got out of the Caddy couldn’t believe it, she hardly even felt it. THAT’S a real car!!

I had a triple blue ’76 Sedan DeVille in the mid-80’s. Great ride, comfy seats, luxurious. And while that 500ci wasn’t a rocket by any means, it would go great down the Interstate. And with the 2 speed auto, it would accelerate forever before shifting if you got on it. I did surprise a Vega once. Beat him off the line on city streets. :D

I agree, Miguel. The modern Cadillac’s are mostly built for performance. I, too, am an older man, but would still like to have a new Caddy. I would love to experience their quality of performance and handling. There are no more boulevard cruisers built in America that I can think of. For a cushy ride, and boulevard cruising, I drive my ’85 Mercury Grand Marquis LS, with just over 9K original miles. 145 horsepower from a 302. It wasn’t supposed to be fast, but it’s a car where you say to yourself , when you get to your destination, “I’ve arrived”.

Looks pretty nice in ALL of the extra photos. :-)
Some signs of paint touch ups, & the underside has been undercoated (fairly recent?), but I couldn’t see any signs of “tin cancer” hiding anywhere. (…although I’d almost HAVE TO expect that a few minor rust areas have been repaired.)
Overall it is a VERY NICE example. A true Time Capsule!
Especially Nice considering that it is located in OHIO!! (I’d expect a ’76 Caddy from California to perhaps look this nice, but NOT one that has lived in Ohio!)
Someone got themselves a nice car! (y) (y)
