We have featured the FC-150 before, the last time was back in July and it had a BIN of 10K more then this one. This 1958 Willys Jeep FC-150 is listed here on craigslist in Terre Haute, IN for $4,500.
According to the owner, this was a barn find that was found with the cylinder head off. They reassembled the engine and it smoked too much, so they then went back in and replaced the rings and now claim that it “runs great now with very little smoke.”
The interior looks great and some of the new or replaced items include: water pump, converted brake master cylinder to a dual circuit system, motor and transmission mounts, door seals, hub lockouts on front axle.
There appears to be some holes in the bed and there’s rust still left to be dealt with.
The seller claims that this FC runs and that you can drive it. Work that still needs to be done: brake lights, turn signals, emergency brake needs adjustment, PTO cable in frozen, fuel strainer gasket is leaking, the wipers are not connected yet. The next owner may need to work on or replace the radiator. If you drive this FC over 50 mph you will notice that the engine is running “hot”. If you are interested you are asked to give them a call to schedule a test drive. At this point we’d suggest you stay at 50 or below…

Can’t recall the last time I saw one of these in the flesh, but there is just something so charming about a cab-over jeep. The price seems quite fair, even considering the work that will need to go into it. Parts are generally available. I’m not an off roading enthusiast but if this were closer I might have to go take a look at this one.
Just replacing piston rings is what I have always referred to as the poor mans rebuild. I have done this myself on at least two Hondas and a Toyota. If your going to do it your best to use cast rings as they will wear in faster. The up side to this you can stop the engine from smoking for about two years. The problem is that without reboring the cylinders there will be taper wear at the top of the bore, this will cause the rings to flex in and out as the piston travels up and down and will brake the compression rings over time. Not an ideal solution for long term ownership and a bit shady for fast sale. I did it to keep my old commuter cars going as I was to poor to do it right.
This seems like another great deal and it would be a fun, winter project; nice find!
