“Little Old Lady’s” 1979 Pontiac Firebird

According to the ad, the owner of this 1979 Pontiac Firebird is an 85-year-young woman from Red Hook, New York. She has apparently owned the car for decades and it was her “weekend, for fun only” car. Unfortunately, she hasn’t driven it for several years and is now ready to pass it along to someone who will appreciate it. It can be found for sale here on eBay with a requested opening bid of just under $7,000. There have been no bids on the car yet, but it is still early in the bidding. Have a closer look at this classic!

At first glance, the interior doesn’t look too bad, but the ad says it needs a lot of attention. Apparently some critters have invaded over the years of storage and made a few homes along the way. The all-black interior is really striking against the bright yellow exterior. The seller says the odometer reads 42,000 miles and to their knowledge, it hasn’t turned over past 100K. Hopefully, it won’t take too much work to get the cockpit cleaned up.

Pontiac Firebirds and Trans-Ams had a wide variety of engines over the years with the largest being the 455 cubic inch H.O. Unfortunately, this one has a fairly anemic 301 with a 2bbl carburetor. The seller says it “runs fine” and recently passed state inspection.

The body was restored around 1990 and still looks like it’s in great shape. These cars can be prone to rust, but a closer inspection of this one will tell the real story. Hopefully, it will find a good home and be enjoyed by the new owner for years to come. What do you think about this one?

I could never easily get in and out of these, even 40+ years ago, not sure how a LOL could do it. As far as the 301, that is perfect for the car, because Sunday drives like she used it for is what it should be for now.

She would have been born about 1935 if 85 today, so about 44 when this car came out.

The hood was definitely replaced. The hood is from a Formula model. I can tell because of the fake scopes.

Did no. T/As or Formulas come with a rear spoiler? Looks like an Esprit maybe with new hood and rear?

This car has at least 142K miles on it. Very rough condition. Also, check out the odometer. The numbers aren’t lined up as if they are ready to roll over. Just sell it for what it is. Junk ready for someone to restore. Some of these back stories “Owned by an old lady who only drove it to church on leap years during a full moon” are ridiculous.

Critters may have gotten to it? All the wiring could be fried. This looks to be a black hole to me. You can dump 12 large in this thing and never get your money back. Plus, miles look more like 6 figures.
      I’d keep looking.

The only thing this flipper is missing is the staged photo with an old person standing next to the car like they are saying goodbye to it !

Lovely looking car. I’ve always loved the 1979-81 Pontiac Firebird. If this is indeed a “little old lady’s” car, I cannot imagine it had been driven hard. I only hope it has been driven, and preferably been carefully maintained.

Could this be one of the famed “Yellow Birds” from the 1979-80 time period? Maybe not because of the black interior? SkyBird in 1977, RedBird in 1978, Yellow Bird in 1979-80. All 3 of those cars were marketed for women. And yes that is a Formula hood! The 301 was as big an engine as you could get in a Firebird in 1979. Step up to a Formula or a Trans Am and you could still get the 403.

The 301 wasn’t a great motor, the valve guides wore out quickly, thus pulling off the heads prematurely.

If it isn’t a Yellowbird, make it so?
She’s sittin mighty high in the back. Stock leafs in a regular bird could not handle 2 adult rear seat passengers & the cars would bottom out.
Many such birds got rear air shocks, shackles, or spring shocks.

Springs were terrible on that and the GP. I had a 79 GP with 301 4 bbl and 200 transmission…ugh

The color is off, I don’t think it came in that yellow. Definitely not the Yellowbird Esprit. I wouldn’t say it looks like it’s in great shape…paint is in good condition but otherwise looks like it hasn’t had a pampered life.

42,000 miles and it already has been repainted ? There is overspray in the door jams and under hood, and well as some of the weatherstripping. The front seat looks like it has some black duct tape on sides and the hood looks incorrect. This sounds like just another flipper story – does anyone believe these guys stories anymore ?
