Long Bed Beauty: 1986 Toyota Hilux 4×4

When it comes to blue-chip investments, old Toyota trucks are as good as gets these days. In my opinion, one of the luckiest finds right now is a clean, rust-free four-wheel-drive Toyota pickup that some older driver has been using to make hardware store runs for the last ten years. The truck shown here is a 1986 4×4 model with the optional long bed. It’s in rust-free condition thanks to years of living in California, and it’s listed here on eBay with bids to $5,600 and the reserve unmet.

This truck also sports the optional SR5 package and those kick-ass factory decals. The chrome bumpers are in incredible condition, which is one of those details that’s a tell-tale sign a vehicle has been kept indoors and rarely left to bake in the sun. What’s even more amazing about a truck like this is that up until recently, it was just a used pickup – so kudos to the owner that managed to never let it slip into beater status.

Now, where it gets even better is that this truck has 150,800 miles on the clock. How often do you find your basic, bare-bones pickup with that many miles on the clock that still looks this good? The cloth seats are in excellent shape, the dashboard isn’t cracked, the door panels haven’t been hacked up for speakers – and the list goes on. Look at the color of the plastics around the shift boot and the rubber boot itself. This Toyota has been treasured, and that’s exactly the kind of truck you want to buy.

Recent maintenance performed by the seller includes all fluids, a new fuel pump, gas shocks, windshield, complete front brake job, and more detailed in the listing. The seller also discloses that a mild front end impact rendered it totaled due to not being insured with classic automobile insurance, so while it does have a salvage title, I wouldn’t worry much about it given how strong the market it is for these old-school Toyota trucks.

With the way the market has been for good clean used trucks, I bet this sells for somewhere between $12K-$14K.

I assume it is a 22R, though how can you tell under all that stuff? Best in fuel injected form, but still pretty nice. Should go a long ways yet before any engine work is required.

You can readily tell the difference: the 22R (carbureted) has the round large air cleaner as on this truck. The 22RE (fuel injected) has a rectangular air box on the right-hand side of the cam cover.

22R without the -E. Round air cleaner and mechanical fuel pump up front. Should be about ready for a timing chain and guides……fond memories, but I really like my Tacoma with modern engine and safety features.

I bought a 1986 1-ton long bed with the EFI. It was easily distinguishable with the EFI badge on the side just between the window frame of the door and the bed. Mine had a 5-speed and AC and it was the best darn little truck one could want. This one will go for crazy money!

I think you’re right. Great looking and great condition…all I could ask for.

    My favorite is a 82 long box 5spd SR5 4wd.

Is that an SR5? My 1984 Toyota long bed SR5 has the instrument panel that has a Tac, along with four other, non-idiot light, actual analog dials. It also has bucket seats. The instrument panel I see on this truck has no Tac – it is the panel that was in the Deluxe model of the truck – which I had that in my Deluxe, 1988 Toyota long bed.

You’re right … I sold these back in the mid-80s and the SR5 had different decals, had the tach, and had SR5 on the tailgate … I made the mistake of telling a buyer we’d add the SR5 decals to his base model truck – price was equivalent to about $1,000 in today’s money and came out of my gross …

It has the wind wing windows though. Odd combination, but I think it’s a factory SR5 because of that.

I had an 86 shortbed 4×4 Deluxe. My coach had an 87 SR5 Xtracab. His had the tach and the full door panels, bucket seats. Mine looked like this one minus the stripes and wind wings. Maybe you had to go Xtracab to get the tach and such?

Oddly, I had the dealer remove most of the side decals. Kept the ones on the tailgate. SR5 5 speed, with tach, with EFI, Xtra-Cab. Cannot remember about cozy wings, will have to look at an old photo.

I had an 86 Xtra cab SR5 but 2wd & EFI with 5 speed. Very fun and reliable. I like everything about this one except the carburetor. Thanks for sharing.
