When the Monte Carlo was introduced as a 1970 model, it was billed as the first personal luxury car offered by Chevrolet, and the timing was excellent, as this segment was becoming more popular in the auto industry. Although their days were numbered, muscle cars were also still a hot seller at the time, and it’s fortunate that Chevy also included an optional SS package for the first two years of production. However, the Super Sport faded after that and didn’t return until 1983, but the timing was also good a dozen years later, as many consumers were growing tired of the numerous mundane cars on the market. Located in Flemington, New Jersey, this 1988 Monte Carlo SS here on eBay is reportedly in show-ready condition, with the seller encouraging interested buyers to come inspect the car and take it for a test drive. So far, bidding has reached $15,700.

Super Sport availability lasted from 1983 through 1988 for the fourth-generation Monte Carlo, with the ’88 model having the second-lowest production, with a total of 16,204 manufactured. Interestingly, that’s a higher number than the base coupe for that year, of which just 13,970 units were made, all due to a considerably shorter-than-normal run. The seller states that the body and paint are in amazing condition, and that this SS has always been stored inside a climate-controlled garage. It’s encouraging that he also says not to expect any disappointments here, and lists not being driven regularly as his only reason for wanting to sell.

From what I can tell, just about everything inside looks completely stock, right down to the AM/FM/Cassette Stereo in the dash. It appears that there may be only slight wear on the top area of the door panel fabric, but overall, the interior seems to remain in excellent shape. This one also features T-Tops, adding even more desirability to an already sought-after car. Painting the black trim along the outside of the top glass panels would be a well-spent afternoon.

Powering the Monte Carlo SS in 1988 was a 305 V8, which is somewhat underpowered by today’s standards, with a factory HP rating of 180. The owner says the engine runs awesome, with no leaks, no unusual noises, and no other issues. He’s also confident this one’s still capable of being driven anywhere, and I like the fact that this one’s being auctioned, so the marketplace can determine the real-world value instead of a high buy-it-now price tag. How much would you be willing to spend on this 1988 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Super Sport?

The SS was pretty much just an appearance package. Everything on it could be ordered with other Montes as options, including the drive train. You could probably find a nice one with all the goodies but minus the decals.
Its true. These cars epitomize the tacky flashyness of the 80s. Total dogs as far as performance. Pass every time.
Nah. Look it up. The HO 5.0 was only available on the SS.
nice car. fresh tags on it. could be a quick flip. bids are still at a fair price
And no front plate bracket required by NJ. Out of state car
Really do love the looks of the 80’s SS Monte’s and overall this looks pretty clean, but being in NJ with no underside photos and a zero feedback rating on the seller, I’d definitely want to inspect it in person, no matter how rust free the seller may say it is.
I’ve got to call this seller a fibber.
Lots of sun fade on the door tops and front & rear seats means this was not stored in a climate controlled garage. And, how would the seller know that, being that the vehicle history provided in the ad shows that they are the 3rd owner and have only owned it for the past 5 years.
Overall, it’s not too bad, but honesty goes a long way in my book.
