Luxury Cruiser: 1976 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible

Here in Australia, the long, cold Winter is drawing to a close. Today the sun is shining and there isn’t a cloud in the sky…and I want a car like this Eldorado to make the most of it. You will find this Cadillac listed for sale here on eBay. Located in New Baltimore, Michigan, it comes with a clear title. Bidding on this Eldorado opened at $100, but has now risen to $6,600 in this No Reserve auction.

This is a striking and imposing looking car finished in Crystal Blue Firemist Metallic. The paint isn’t original with the car undergoing a repaint around 10 years ago. It does present well, with only a few marks and blemishes which you would expect after 10 years. As the seller states, this is a driver’s car, not a trailer queen. The external trim and chrome look really good, and the seller also provides a shot of the underside of the car which appears to be rock solid. There are a few minor issues with the soft-top, and according to the owner it sometimes needs a bit of help going up or down. However, it may just be a case that some judicious lubrication and adjustment will fix this. The seller states that some of the weather stripping may also need replacing.

Overall the interior presents fairly well. Apparently, there is some cracking in the leather, but it is possible that it may respond to some conditioning to make it more supple. The dash looks good, as do the door trims. There is some lifting of some of the wood-grain, and I would probably look at locating a replacement steering wheel as the original really detracts from the look of the interior. The carpet is also a bit faded, but it doesn’t look that bad to me.

The car is fitted with an aftermarket stereo which has been installed in the glove compartment. The first thing that caught my eye was those speakers installed in the rear trims. I’m not a fan of them because I think that they look out of place. If this were my car I would probably look for a competent person who could change the color of the speaker covers to better match the interior trim. The seller must also like their music loud (and you’re never too old for that) because there is a subwoofer installed in the trunk. Otherwise, all of the power accessories such as the power windows operate as they should, although the air conditioning doesn’t blow cold.

1976 marked the final year of Eldorado Convertible production until 1984. It also marked the last year that the Eldorado was fitted with the 500ci V8. This one is said to run really well, although it does require a little bit of coaxing when it’s cold. Otherwise, it cruises well, and the automatic transmission shifts smoothly. The seller says that the brakes work well and that the car is fitted with good tires.

I’ll be honest here: I’d never really seriously looked at prices on this model Eldorado. When I did, what I found was rather surprising. Prices vary wildly, and sometimes they seem to have little to do with condition. The cheapest similar car that I could find was priced at $10,000. However, I did find another example that was in only marginally better condition than this one that was priced at $34,000. Even if you consider the cheapest example as a benchmark, this 1976 Eldorado Convertible has the potential to be a pretty decent buy.

A lot of people bought these to sock away in storage as they were the “Last Convertible.” Of course, they weren’t the last, and one guy even sued GM for reducing the value of his car when they came out with one later.

No need to comment on the 500 CI engine. They are big, fast and preform wonderfully. I have had them in hot rods, , pick ups and have even seen them in air boats. Tons of torque, . Sure they are a pig on gas, but half way thru second gear, I always start to smile.
