Malibu Roller Project: 1964 Chevrolet Chevelle

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

General Motors unveiled four mid-size cars in 1964, perhaps in response to FOMOCO and Chrysler going that route two years earlier. Chevrolet’s entry was the Chevelle, which had similar proportions to the 1957 Bel Air (the full-size Chevies had gotten bigger since then). The top-of-the-line Malibu was popular, which would have included this Sport Coupe. Not much is known about its first 60 years, but now it’s a rough rolling project that will not be a restoration for the faint of heart. Located in a driveway in Roseville, California, this “opportunity” is available here on eBay for $3,800 OBO.

In its first year, Chevy sold more than 130,000 Chevelle Malibu Sport Coupes. The split between “regular” and Super Sport editions was about even, and more of them were sold with a V8 engine in some displacement vs. an inline. We don’t know how this Malibu was born, but a 283 with a Powerglide would have been a common pairing. This car has been mostly stripped down to the metal with a bit of rust here and there to be attended to. A lot of what’s missing in the photos has survived and will go with the Chevy when you haul it away.

The seller believes the floor pans have been replaced at some point. And the front clip is only resting in place with some apparently switched fenders included. All its glass has survived except for the windshield. The rear cross member is all bent up, as the car may have been towed from it. If you prefer a clean slate to work from, this could be it. But surely, better examples that have a drivetrain are out there looking to be saved.

You are right, there will be better examples out there. It’s not the missing drivetrain, it’s all of the missing small parts that’s the deal breaker, hunting down what’s not shown or specifically mentioned will be costly and time consuming. Rebuildable small block engines and automatic transmission are plentiful and inexpensive, even running engines pulled from a car destined to get an engine upgrade aren’t particularly expensive.

This car is rough and will likely need a parts car to complete, there is a reason the seller didn’t sell it the last two times he posted it on eBay, once for $6,500 then for $4,500, now for $3,800.

Nice ‘64 Chevelle-in the garage to the right front of this one. Now that he’s stripped anything of value off this one he wants to get it out of his driveway so the Avanti next to it can park there.
One of the best year Chevelles IMHO but there’s nothing left of this one.
    Too bad, figuratively and literally.

To much for barely a parts car with parts probably used for the other car in the garage.

This 64 was the parts car for the other Chevelle in the garage that is finished. I guess it’s time to take out the trash. In a manner of speaking.
