Pontiac produced four primary versions of the second generation Firebird from 1970 to 1981. These included the base Firebird, Esprit, Formula and Trans Am. This 1978 Pontiac Firebird is located in Corsicana, Texas and is listed for sale for $15,900 here on Facebook Marketplace. The car is white with a blue interior. It has been in the same family since 1991 and has some modifications included Trans Am spoilers and front fenders. Also, the rear tail lights have been changed to 1979 tail light treatment. We appreciate Lothar for sending us this listing.

The ad states that the engine is a Chevrolet LG3 305 cubic inch V8 engine backed by a Turbo 350 automatic transmission. It is said to have been recently rebuilt and it looks to have an aftermarket carburetor, air cleaner and AC compressor. GM rated this engine at 135 horsepower and 240 lb ft of torque when new. The horsepower was 10 horsepower higher when it was equipped with a 4 speed manual transmission. The LG3 305 cubic inch V8 engine was not available in high altitude locations. With this engine, either a 2.41:1 or a 3.23:1 rear axle ratio was available.

The interior shows some wear and sun fading. The front bucket seats have been changed out. The car is said to have new tires and be well maintained. However, the AC does not work and their is a small crack in the windshield. The base Firebird steering wheel has been changed out to a Formula wheel that came standard on a Trans Ams and was optional on the Formula. The car does have T-tops but not too many more options.

This Firebird rides on 15×7 Pontiac aluminum snowflake wheels and aftermarket white letter tires. Pontiac built 187,287 Firebirds in 1978 which included all Firebird, Esprit, Formula and Trans Am models. Of this 32,671 base Firebirds were produced. Aftermarket rear window louvers cover the back window and the side windows are tinted. All in all, it looks to be a clean Firebird for its age. Does the change from originality bother you?

Plain Jane Firebird with a garbage motor and an auto loader for nearly 16K? Not today, not tomorrow, not ever.

Non curvy ’79-’81 t/a wheel flares do not look good on a ’77-’78 – or a ’79-’81 IMO.
