Super SUV: 1993 GMC Typhoon

Ah, the GMC Typhoon: I never tire of seeing these come up for grabs, and home to someday call one of them of my own. No matter which flavor you like – this Jimmy-bodied example or the Syclone pickup – you can’t go wrong, especially when it comes to epic factory hot rods. The early 90s were a sweet time to be an automotive enthusiasts, with seemingly every domestic brand building muscle and sports cars with warrantees. Find this clean Typhoon here on eBay with bids to $17,900 and the reserve unmet.

The Typhoon looks sharp in white paint with polished alloy wheels that show no visible flaws. Mileage is somewhat high at 80,000, so this GMC has been driven. That’s not a bad thing, but it does make the current bid price (and the fact that the reserve is unmet) a wake up call for anyone who thought they’d scoop one of these up cheaply – those days are long behind us. The bodywork looks quite tidy as well, and you have to love seeing these in a color other than black.

I can remember years ago when Cash for Clunkers was initiated (what a garbage program that was) there was video circulating of a Syclone sitting in the line of dealer trade-in vehicles awaiting its lethal cocktail of ingredients to make its engine useless on the used parts market. Supposedly, a daring dealership employee figured out a way to save the truck, but I suspect he’s been in hiding ever since. this Typhoon shows the sort of wear you’d expect inside for a vehicle with 80,000 miles, but the interior is still presentable overall.

Surprisingly, the seller promises that the turbocharged V6 engine – which responds very well to modifications – has no such tweaks under-hood. In fact, the only actual enhancements are some additional gauges on the A-pillar and an upgraded radio with better speakers. The original components are included with the sale, and aside from making sure there are some maintenance records accompanying it to show that it’s been serviced over the last 80,000 miles, this looks like a decent buy assuming a reserve price of no more than $20K.

( crickets chirping 15 hours later) I had an S-10 Blazer similar to this, and while I liked the vehicle proper, it was an engineering nightmare. Try changing plugs on THIS motor. This was nothing more than a meager attempt to jazz up a normally boring, dated vehicle, and few fell for it. I think 2WD renditions weren’t what many people wanted, the 4WD was the one. Only made a couple years ( 91-93) and less than 4500 made, it wasn’t a big seller, but here one is. If you think it’s worth $18g’s, by all means, have at it, I doubt you’ll find another.

A “meager attempt” that ran the quarter in 14 flat. Quicker to 60 than a Ferrari 348.

This truck was pretty fast for its day. I remember reading that it could take on a corvette in the quarter mile with the turbo six engine. Always loved the styling of this body and this and its pick up brethren are always attention getters at local cruise ins. GM was on the come back trail and this was a popular choice in its day. Its another id add to my collection if i had a warehouse to keep it in.

This Typhoon should go for big money ($20k at least) these were rare and on par with GNX collectibility. The 4WD was always a Biotch to work on.
