Motorhome Laredo: 1985 Jeep CJ7

This 1985 Jeep CJ7 Laredo sports original decals and paint, and presents like a truck far fresher than its 90,331 miles would suggest. That’s likely due to it being a rig that was towed behind an RV most of its life, used for driving into town when the mini fridge went bare. Like most of the listings for vehicles that spent most of its life tethered to a motorhome, the seller contends the mileage is far lower than what is shown due to how that mileage was accumulated. Regardless of your feelings on how that math shakes out, this is still a very nice example of a CJ7. Find it here on eBay with bidding to $16,600 with no reserve.

The Jeep is said to run and drive well, despite spending several years in a garage without much use. The seller reports it only racked up 2,100 miles over the course of six years. As such, he notices some lifter tick at low idle speeds, but claims the Jeep otherwise runs out just fine. This may indicate the next owner will find an issue or two that comes from lack of regular use, but I wouldn’t worry much about it. The soft top still appears to be in fine shape, and aside from a few snaps having broken, no issues are noted. The Jeep currently sports soft doors and the seller mentions the tube frame doors are included but will need new latches.

The interior is in very nice condition, save for some wear on the driver’s bolster. The seller notes the interior scheme is Black/Nutmeg over “Spice” upholstery. The driver’s seat shows some wear on the outside bolster, but the cabin otherwise is perfectly usable as-is. The seller confirms that all gauges, lights, and related switchgear are in good working order. There is supposedly no rust on the body, aside from underneath the floor mats, where some of the superficial covering has come off and allowed some surface rust to creep in. As a Colorado truck, I’d still feel very confident buying one like this sight-unseen, as the rust issues disclosed by the seller pale in comparison to what we see in the Northeast.

The Jeep is said to “…runs at highway speeds with no issues. Runs and drives like a fuel injected Jeep.” The engine bay looks clean, but the seller notes that oil pressure is low at first start-up. Now, that’s not a big deal, as some makes and models behave differently. My Subaru XT6 project was exactly like this, even after a full engine reseal, and the owner’s manual actually stated that low oil pressure at startup was perfectly normal. As far as Jeep inline-sixes go, I’ll leave it to the Wrangler experts to deduct whether this should be a cause for concern for the next owner. Still, this is a beautiful truck, and the bidding seems to indicate low oil pressure or not, this is the one to own.

“My baloney has a 1st name”,,,Oh,come on, what do expect posting something like this from me. Where to start, let’s “start” with the motor. This Jeep got a slew of miles, and driven, not towed. Low oil pressure, even at idle, indicates worn bearings, and a tick is never good. Lifters don’t wear from being towed. My 4 cyl. which is a derivative of this motor( when I got the thermostat, the gasket said, AMC in line 4 and 6, 1968-1995!), pegs the oil pressure gauge on startup, and warm, maybe 75lbs. 6’s( and 4’s) usually have higher oil pressure, my 350 V8 has half that, and considered normal. I think, flat 4’s( Subaru) have lower oil pressure. Shift boot torn, high miles, seat torn, high miles, engine and underside a mess, wires under dash, and again, from being driven, and being towed isn’t ideal either, as suspension continues to wear. This Colorado no rust ( see opening line), while the dry conditions are favorable, I found, my floor is rusted a bit, not from salt, which is widely used on highways, but from a leak around the windshield, and puddled there. Sure looks pretty with a gallon of ArmourAll, and it is an attractive one, but if anyone is qualified to nay say these things, it’s me, I looked at a bunch, and I just can’t believe 20 people are bidding this thing 5 figures+. I’m not the only Jeep person here, and I think this 20 bids is a load of, well,,, baloney. This Jeep will nickel and dime you to death, trust me.

Since it has a 5 digit odometer, I’m surprised that the owner didn’t drive it for another 10K miles and advertise it as “Only 331 Original Miles!, Won’t Last Long!, I Know What I Have!”, along with a $45K BIN. Lol!

Seems like the standard old-jeep sales pitch now, stick some tow-bar mounts on it, clean it up and claim it coasted through life!

Sounds like a bunch of jealous women here! A Jeep in this condition all original is well worth where it’s bid to, the items listed worn total under a $1000 to repair to new, to find a Jeep in this original shape is a rarity to say the least, it is an 85 and was towed since new so saw the elements if it was running or not and seats and shifter boots do get brittle after 35 years, as an owner of more then a few restored to new and like new Cj’s that has bought and sold more then I count this Jeep is a steal any where under 25k you just don’t find them like this and that’s why they get the money just like any other desireable vehicle, all original in excellent shape = big money. That’s the game don’t be bitter that you didn’t find it, get out there and look and let the man who did enjoy it without picking them to death with jealous eyes

Don’t know about mileage rolling up while being towed, maybe thi year model does but my 2002 doesn’t, towed it 5,000 miles this winter but none of them got added to the odometer reading. With the transfer case in neutral no mileage rolls up.

High mileage doesn’t just affect the engine, tranny, etc. It also wears wheel bearings and whatever other bearings are involved with drive shafts, etc. Probably the rear differential too. So, if mileage is a concern, being towed doesn’t negate the problem. Plus, I think Howard A is correct in this instance, and I don’t often agree with his assessments.
