The seller says this great-looking 1970 Peugeot 404 Wagon has been used for many movies, commercials, and TV shows. It’s unique enough to both fit into the background and/or stand out. We don’t see a lot of 404 wagons here in the U.S., especially in this color. They have it posted here on craigslist in Tarzana, California, and they’re asking $3,950. A heck of a deal, as they don’t say in Tarzana. Here is the original listing, and thanks to Jack M. for the tip!

Speaking of the color, I believe this car has been repainted in this mint green. It appears to have originally been Sable, as seen in the two engine photos. Speaking of that, two engine photos in a craigslist ad? Very well done, seller! This car is 15 feet long, but it almost looks longer than that to me. It’s a classy and slick design, in my opinion, having been designed by the famous Italian design group Pininfarina.

I haven’t really seen a flaw in this car yet, and I know that French cars don’t get the highest, most glowing comments here on Barn Finds. Either from personal experience or from repeating things that we’ve all heard for decades. The 404 was made from 1960 through 1975, and they were made in just about every body style possible, with two doors, four doors, a convertible, a wagon, and even a truck! Here’s what the clean rear cargo area looks like. $3,950? That seems like a steal for this car in 2026. That luggage rack is apparently a hard-to-find piece and has to add to the value a bit.

Things get a little more back to reality inside. You can see some splitting and rips (is that redundant?) on the driver’s seat, and this car has a ZF three-speed automatic transmission rather than a 4-speed manual. The back seat looks perfect, and the legroom appears to be basketball player-friendly. Unfortunately, a clogged drain caused some rust in the front floors, so that’ll have to be addressed, and it needs a new ignition switch. The asking price just got a little shakier. Reportedly, only 736 automatics were made for the 1970 model year.

The seller says it was upgraded to a Peugeot 504 engine. This last gasp of the 404 for the U.S. and Canada, the 1970 and 1971 cars, received an upgraded twin-carb engine similar to what was used in the 504, so maybe that’s what they mean? That engine would have been an XM-series 1.8-liter OHV inline-four with 87 horsepower and 108 lb-ft of torque. It’s backed by the ZF 3HP12 three-speed automatic and sends power to the rear wheels. It runs, drives, and stops, but needs brake work. Have any of you owned a Peugeot 404?

At first I thought….. So THIS is what Mrs. Columbos car looks like!!! I always loved Peter Falks line about his wifes vehicle being nothing special, and just for transportation. I realize I’m off topic here, but thinking about Columbos Peugeot drop top, I could picture this being his wifes car. This wagon is really nice overall, the automatic definitely would sap some performance out of it. But otherwise I really like it. Great write up on what is a pretty rare Peugeot wagon Scotty, thank you.
