While this vintage Ferrari may look oddly similar to a 365 GTC, there are subtle details that suggest it’s not exactly a factory car. The obvious difference is the roof, which is missing, a convertible top in its place. The NART nomenclature that is mentioned in the listing and in a badge on the rear taillight section also provides a clue as to what this car’s backstory is, and you can check out the full listing here on craigslist. This 1969 365 GT NART Spider isn’t listed with a price, which is hardly a surprise considering the collectability.
The NART – or North American Racing Team, belonging to one Luigi Chinetti – is responsible for building some very desirable Ferraris. You may think that Chinetti’s involvement in the build links this car to something akin to a competition past but that’s not entirely accurate. The conversion to a roadster body began in earnest before the project stalled and basically sat idle for a number of years as Chinetti’s company reorganized. Once he got back to the project, there was no way this model was anywhere near current enough to go racing.
So Chinetti set out to build the car he always felt Ferrari should have made, introducing a variety of cosmetic improvements that actually yielded some performance benefit, like a twin-nostril scoop that was utilized to shovel air into six Weber carburetors. The Ferrari has under 15,000 original kilometers, likely owning, in part, to its many years spent under the knife and awaiting reconstructive surgery. The condition appears to be excellent, and the “unknown NART,” as it’s called, has been seen quite infrequently over the last few years.
The Ferrari is well-documented in this article from Forza which captures the sentiment perfectly behind a one-off car like this: “The Chinetti Conundrum” is the title of the article, and it includes some excellent photos of the Ferrari in its various stages of development. The car has been recognized at several notable classic car shows and events and would likely earn its next owner an entrance to any number of limited-access gatherings. This Ferrari is in outstanding condition and its history is nothing short of fascinating. Thanks to Barn Finds reader T.J. for the find.
